Strange World Is a Historic Bomb for Disney on a Weak Thanksgiving Box Office Weekend

Not to get off-topic, but I think Avatar 2 is going to bomb (or at the very least, not make back its $$$) for similar reasons. Studios need to put more effort into unique and cool storylines to get butts in seats at movie theaters. Cool, flashy visuals brought the crowds in 2008, but now it's hardly something a family is going to shell out $25 a person to go see.

Also re: Avatar- THREE HOURS LONG?! Inexcusable. At least Disney animation seems to understand that that's entirely too long to sit through a movie unless there's an intermission with espresso shots included.
It's a free country. But, I wouldn't bet against James Cameron. At least, I wouldn't make a habit out of it.

Strange World's box office has to be extremely embarrassing to a lot of CMs at TWDC. An R-rated, Violent Night, obliterated Strange World at the box office in only its second week in the theaters. No offense to the folks that I'm assuming worked very hard on Violent Night, but an animated Disney movie should not be trounced by Violent Night at the box office.

That's epic -- bad.
Well I have seen both, Strange World last Tuesday and Violent Night last night.

Strange World, while advertised in my area was clearly not advertised to most on these boards. From the start Disney decided it was not a theater movie. While it was pretty in trailers it didn't have that punch to have kids ask to see it. It was a good movie, good messages, visually pretty and we all enjoyed it. I said I'd probably watch again, it is a movie that likely has lots of hidden moments I missed. Would I tell a family to spend $100 to go see it - no, wait for it to come to Disney+. Just didn't have lasting value. They knew that as there is no merchandise.

Violent Night, highly advertised with edgy trailers. Known cast (I had no idea John was in it). A wide appeal from teenagers up = much bigger market. The movie was great. It was an adult Home Alone merged with Die Hard except Santa killed more bad guys than John McClane. LOTS of laughs, non-stop action. Totally expected stunts mixed with completely unexpected. It was like our favorite movies mixed up in one. This will become an annual Holiday Movie watch for me.

TOTALLY no surprise that a fun action movie for the majority of the market would do better than a low key children's animated movie.

Yes, there are parents who will want to expose their children to all types of content. Disney is a Corp responsible to their stockholders. Audiences/parents have spoken loud and clear that they will not accept "kids" movies with LGBTQ content. Disney can keep generating these movies, and will keep having them bomb at the box office. There is a place for LGBTQ, that is what I thought HULU was for, putting on adult content. But heck, it is their money and since I do not own any stock, go ahead and keep producing these movies. Just remember the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expecting different results.
WHAT? You are saying gay characters should only be in adult content movies? o_O
LGBTQ characters don't equate to "LGBTQ content." Unless you think that simply existing is controversial.
Obviously posters on this board believe that so ...
I can't understand how it's "adult content." Like, if Ethan had a crush on a girl, that would not be adult content, but because it's a boy, it is? It's not like there are full-on love scenes or anything!
It's not. It is how people who hate others find a way to deflect from why they really don't want it in movies.

they made $75 million for the re-release of the original in 3 weeks. they'll be just fine.

Also, most fantasy epics run anywhere from 2-3hrs in runtime. Star Wars, Marvel, Lord of the Rings, take your pick

i think what you're saying is that sexuality is an adult only concept, and that my friend is dangerous. I'm not saying anything explicit should be shown to children, but children learning about different walks of life whether or not you personally agree with it is valuable.

If everyone read my posts I stated that parents/audiences have rejected LGBTQ content in KIDS movies. I personally do not care. So do not make is appear I am some kind of homophobic. I really am totally indifferent. The truth is if a movie is good, I do not care what social content is in it.

Can you say what movies completely flopped because of LGBTQ being a part of it

If you have anything to back up the idea that "parents/audiences have rejected LGBTQ content in kids movies" other than your own personal opinion, I have bad news for you. You're homophobic.

Strange World was the first movie we saw in an actual theater since Frozen 2 in November 2019! My kids watch lots and lots of YouTube Kids and they had NO IDEA what this movie was. So it definitely wasn't advertised well on that platform at least. It was a fun movie, and the kids liked it, but I do think the woke message would drive off some parents for sure. No matter your stance the wokeness was very in your face in this movie. Even though I support the message it did detract from the film for me.

Can you name a kids movie with LGBTQ content that was a smashing success? I can’t think of any.

How many have there even been? There are two recent Disney examples, but I don't think we can say that's why they failed - they would have likely failed based on other reasons. Strange World doesn't do any better if Ethan has a crush on a girl.

There's the 2012 movie Paranorman, which features a gay character in the supporting cast. That movie did well, but wasn't a "smash success". I do remember when I saw it in theaters, a woman walked out of the theater when the character was revealed to be gay which made me roll my eyes so hard :rolleyes2

Besides Strange World and Lightyear, there was also Onward, but that doesn't even count as the reference to the character being a lesbian was changed/censored in the international release.

Oh yeah, Paranorman tacked that on at the end, which I thought was a little weird. It's pretty minor though. I haven't caught a lot of animation from companies other than Disney lately, so I don't know what has been in them.

Ok, so now you are name calling without knowing anything about me. Let us not forget that many point to "Lightyear" being a big bomb due to a brief same sex kiss. This whole topic is really disgusting me, cannot make a point without being attacked. So I am done with this topic and will post no more on this subject.
