The cast was myself, Heidi, & Janet (all age 29).

I've always wanted to try this experience as it sounded like so much fun!

i underestimated how long it would take us to get there. We rented a home not far from the Animal Kingdom and it took us about 25 minutes to drive to Fort Wilderness. Then we got on the wrong bus at the campground and it took about 20 minutes to get to the drop off point. Then we had to wait in line to pick up our tickets at will call. Then walk back to the BBQ.

It started at 6:30 and we were about 10 minutes late. At that point all of the tables around the dance floor were full and people were bustling through the food lines.

Maybe it was because were were late but the whole thing felt hectic. We had to balance food and drinks on paper plates. It is in a covered area but not fully enclosed. It was somewhat windy where we sat so our napkins etc blew about a little. the chicken was very tasty. I didn't care for the ribs. The corn on the cob was a bit "soggy" but still good and the watermelon was delicious!

The band was very loud. I'm not a big country music fan but Heidi absolutely loved it and thought they were quite good.

When the characters came out it was a free for all. The character escorts did not do a good job of helping with crowd control and we stood back and watched as parents pushed their children towards the characters.

One child, about 5 years old, found it particularly fun to come up and spank Mickey on the butt as hard as he could. The escort did nothing. The child's parents did nothing. Mickey kept looking for help but nobody did anything. Finally after watching the child do it about 4 times I knelt down and said that wasn't a nice thing to do to someone that you like and that wasn't the best way to get Mickey's attention. Either out of surprise or sheer dumb luck the child stopped hitting Mickey and Mickey blew me a kiss, that was a nice moment.

After the first dance routine Minnie worked one half of the room for autographs and pictures while Mickey worked the other. The characters moved around very very quickly but everyone was able to get a photo if they wanted.

They taught line dancing, the Cotton-Eyed Joe, the macarana. There were lasso tricks and a fiddle tune with Chip and Dale.

I enjoyed the experience and if you enjoy the music and dancing it was a very good value for your money. Not the best for long term one on one character interaction but where else can you dance with the characters?

I was constantly nervous for the safety of the kids on the dance floor though. With pushy parents or sometimes absent parents, I'd want to be extra careful.

I don't think I'd go back but was very glad I tried it.

I am enjoying all of your reviews, but it was especially nice to see this one. I've never been to the Backyard BBQ, and you don't read much about it. Your wonderful review will be helpful to many. Thanks for taking the time to post!

9 days and counting . . . again! :hyper:

I think I've only seen a couple reviews of this event and neither of them were positive. Thanks for sharing, one more reason not to go.

Good for you JC Butterfly! I hate to see the characters abused!!! It really gets to me. I'm glad you addressed the problem. Let's hope the child remembers your advice!!

THANKS! We too were thinking of doing this but was unsure how toddlers would make out. Do I understand you right when you said you had to balance paper plates? This does not sound like something for the little ones. Are there any tables and chairs for the guests? Was this because you arrived late?

Great review JC. We enjoyed it also, but it's not something that I would do again.

Fun & Fancy Free, unless it's changed since we went, you have to go through the buffet line to get your food and drink. That can be difficult with little ones. When we were there, the only seating that they had was picnic tables. I sort of felt like I was at a company picnic.

TammiMcMan, thanks. With what I am hearing I think we will wait until the kids can atleast carry their own dishes. I would hate to have a Mickey Meltdown at the BBQ.

We did the BBQ a couple of years ago during the summer. The food was fine, the music fun, but I highly recommend NOT doing this during the summer months. It is all outside under a pavillion. There are fans but we were still almost too hot to eat. We are from the south and really enjoy warm weather, but we still felt uncomfortable.

Yep, it's rows and rows of picnic tables (attached benches). I imagine if you got there on time or early you could have snagged one of the closer to the dance floor tables.

I don't think this was probably much worse than doing any kind of buffet with toddlers. They had several food lines and I was amazed with how quickly they moved people through. I think since it is plastic plates (I said paper, sort of the same, they're disposable) they are more flimsy so you'd probably end up going through the line a couple of times if you wanted to have one adult just sit at the table with the toddlers.

There were lots of kids there and about 50 middle schoolers on a field trip that night. Everyone seemed to be having a great time.

Also as an aside, we met several people on the Fort Wilderness buses that had been to the campfire program with Chip and Dale (yet another thing I have to try!) and they said it was lots of fun and they had the chance to do a little dancing -- and the program is free witha movie afterwards.

It's my understanding that you don't have to be staying at the campground to participate in that program either.

There is a small petting zoo there that we would have enjoyed to see if we'd had time.

We also witnessed people taking a carriage ride that looked very pleasant. Fort Wildnerness definitely needs futher investigation from me!
