Thanks for posting. This really bums me out because there have been substantial increases in the point costs of a 7 day cruise!

We were going to sacrifice going away next year so that we could do the 7 night cruise in 2003......but we only have 250 points, so now I'm not sure that it's a good use of them given the increase!!! Where does the Western Caribbean cruise go? Have not had info from DVC yet as live in England and it takes ages to get to us!

Deb it will be making stops at Key West, Cozumel, Grand Cayman Island, and Castaway Cay.

Thank you, Robin, for posting this for us! :)

Thank you for posting this info. I called last week to get the points, but the rep didn't mention the difference in points for the western 7-day. Luckily, my plan still works, but why is it more expensive. Are cash customers being charged more also?

It may be because there are 3 ports of call plus Castaway Cay. The Eastern cruise only stops at 2. Usually the more ports the higher the price. At least that is what I have found to be true on other cruise lines.
It may also be that DCL figures people will pay the higher price to go on the "new" cruise. Different islands and excursions for those that have been on the other Disney cruises. I have been to the Bahamas twice and wouldn't care to go again. Have been on a cruise that went to Key West, Cozumel and Grand Cayman. I loved that cruise and would be tempted to pay more to go back with Disney.

I was surprised to see the differences between the western and eastern caribbean rates. Obviously they feel there will be a rush to book the western itinerary.

I know last year during hurricane season the ship was diverted to the western caribbean and made the port stops which will now be done bi-weekly. I'm wondering how things will be handled this year IF there are storms in the western caribbean and the ship is re-routed into possibly to eastern caribbean away from the weather...will those who paid higher points be compensated for the lower point ports? Obviously if the points were the same amount no one would care but if you're paying higher points it definitely will matter. Even Disney can't change the weather. :)

Thanks for pointing out that the larger increases in point costs are for the new Western Caribbean itinerary. The eastern trip did not increase that much: 410 in 2001 vs. 422 in 2002.

As a general rule, Western Caribbean cruises are more expensive than Eastern. This is true even for the same cruise lines and the same exact ship. My suspicion is that it's simply a more "desirable" cruise and people are willing to pay more. I've been on both and it just depends on what you like. I've come to the conclussion that I enjoy cruises the most when I'm on the ship and everything is up and running. Eastern cruises tend to have more sea time and therefore more chance to utilize the ships amenties, restaurants, etc. This also makes a cruise less expensive as the shore excursions can eat your wallet. I usually spend money for excursions, food, taxi, etc then wish I was on the boat. Haven't been on DCL but suspect that would be even more true for them.

Well, I just booked for the inaugural western 7-day on 5/11/02 half points, half cash. In addition to the point increase, DVCs cash prices increased by $200 per adult and $80 per child. Also, I had to give a cc for the entire cash amount now...I'm not sure why I couldn't give a $400 deposit. Anyway, Christine at DVC was very helpful. She ended up having to call DCL 3 seperate times because I forgot to tell her we were traveling with another family and about my Castaway Club Credit. She was great!:)

When using a combination of points and cash to book DCL through MS, they require payment in full on a credit card at time of booking. That also includes payment of the $75 fee to book the cruise. That is standard DVC policy. I am looking forward to booking the Western Itinerary myself! Sounds great! :)

With the addition of the Western Caribbean itinerary, things are looking up for a 2003 7-day cruise for our family. Unless the point costs skyrocket. This time we may have to forgo the Cat 4 room for a couple of Cat 11 cabins. I can't wait to cruise again (even though it means giving up our 2002 WDW vacation).

Not that they will have a "sale" in 2002 - but can anyone tell me about when they announced the fall sales on seven day cruises paid for with points? Thinking about trying a 7-day on points next year, and would like to have an idea on when a sale might be announced.

Bump

I'm also really hoping for a "special" in 2002...

any ideas when they'll post it if it happens?

Ahhhh, watching the sunset from our verandah as we pull away from Castaway Cay.......
