Marriott Corporation recently made all of their properties in the US non-smoking! It is time for Disney to do the same.

I understand smoking is an addiciton but if you need to smoke please do it outside.

Marriott???? I hadn't heard that one.

WDW next?

I sure hope so.

I truly hope never to be at WDW when you are.

Maybe a little more time spent reflecting on your ease of ambulation, relative to that of others, is needed.

ITA. That poster should be thankful on a daily basis that they can walk around the parks.

I'll gladly concede my place in line for a handicapped person.

I always Request at OKW
1) Smoking
2) Near Turtle Pond

We have always gotten bldg 41
WE always book at 11 months if that has any factor.

If they ban smoking from every building , I guess it will be time to sell my DVC.

I am just waiting for the day when it becomes illegal to smoke in your own home with the windows open!

With the strength of the Big Tobacco lobby dwindling, I think we may see a time when the only allowable places to smoke will be in your own property (house and car).

In my community, smoking is banned in all outdoor community places (the parks and playgrounds, little league fields, etc.). And I am a professor at a university, and every year there is talk about making it a smoke-free campus. Personally, I would love it (as students always crowd right outside the doors to smoke, so anyone walking into a building has to walk through a cloud of smoke). Fortunately, I have never seen the "smoking crowd" like this outside the main entrance/check in house of any DVC resorts.

We always reserve NS and have never gotten a smoking room. If we did, I would immediately request to be moved. If they couldn't accommodate us at that resort, I would have them check availability at other DVC resorts. Yes, it's that important to me.

All Disney resorts at Disneyland are smoke-free. The Grand Californian never allowed smoking, and the Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Resort switched over this year.

All Marriott brands in the U.S. and Canada are now smoke-free — with the exception of Marriott Vacation Club. The Marriott Vacation Club properties all seem to be going smoke-free too, but the changes are being handled through the HOAs. Both Marriott Vacation Clubs at which I own will soon be smoke-free, with significant penalties for guests who smoke in their rooms.

Here's what Marriott says at http://marriott.com/marriott.mi?page=smokefree (there's also a FAQ at the site with more details):

A Breath of Fresh Air —
Marriott Goes 100% Smoke-Free in North America

Change is in the air.

All of our lodging brands in the United States and Canada will become 100% smoke-free, beginning in September. This represents the industry’s largest move to a non-smoking environment, with more than 2,300 hotels and corporate apartments and nearly 400,000 guest rooms under the Marriott, JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, Courtyard, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites, Fairfield Inn, TownePlace Suites and Marriott ExecuStay brands.

The new policy includes all guest rooms, restaurants, lounges, meeting rooms, public space and employee work areas. Currently more than 90% of Marriott guest rooms are already non-smoking and smoking is prohibited in many public spaces due to local laws. Demand for non-smoking rooms continues to rise with new information from the Surgeon General on the hazards of secondary smoke.

We look forward to seeing you — so you can experience the clear difference that Marriott offers.

It is inevitable that Disney Vacation Club will also go smoke-free, including balconies — with smoking limited to designated outdoor areas. It's just a question of when.

I predict that Animal Kingdom Villas will be smoke-free from day one. I predict that all DVC resorts will be smoke-free by 2010, if not sooner.

Actually a number of the Marriott VC resorts are in the process of going non smoking on pressure from Marriott. Many of them associated with the refurbishment plans.

I still say and have always taken the position that "the door that squeaks most, gets oiled first". I have had two occasions where they tried to saddle us with a smoking(smoked in) room at OKW after requesting non-smoking. On both occasions I made as big a stink out of it as possible. If we all did this, it might get the big wigs at DVC/WDW to act sooner on this important issue..smjj

I find it hard to believe that ANYONE would keep moving to avoid smokers.

You would if you had a child with asthma. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. My son went into a full-blown attack just walking PAST the entrance of the casino at the Marriot in Aruba the first morning we were there. The cigarette smell coming out of that place was horrible. We walked out of our way to avoid walking anywhere near the place for the rest of the trip. So, yes, we would keep moving if some person or persons were smoking near our son.

Not talking about some kid with CP or MS but when the person gets to the ride and gets out of thier chair to board the ride, they could have waited like everyone else. This has been the case 90% of the time I've veiwed it. I've done the chemo trip already and sick as I felt I never used it to to take advantage of peoples kindness. It's great that disabled people are accomadated, problem is it's abused to the point where you get sick of it. HC parking because your to fat and lazy to walk, give me a break. :moped: and the scooters zipping around the park expecting every one to let them go first, I just love them. A little smoke offends me far less.
As far as smoking in line it's not allowed at any WDW ride and no one should move to get away from it, just tell the person to put it out,and not on the ground it's litter.
I was under the impression that all the pools have designated smoking areas, I know SSR does at the main pool, can't say about the others.

There are many like myself that get out of their chair to walk a short distance to get on a ride but would not be able to stand in the line as an able bodied person.
I have an inoperable spinal condition which gives me limited mobility. I can walk about 100 feet with short rests but if I try to walk much further the pressure on my spinal cord becomes unbearable and I have to sit right than and there or I will collapse. We have invisible disabilities but they are disabilities nonetheless.

Yes, there are a few rides where I may get on quicker such as Peter Pan but there are others where I end up waiting longer than the able guests.
I have waited 45 minutes to ride SE at Epcot when it was a walk on for able-bodied guests.
The HA entrance for SE is at the exit.
I enter there and wait in the handicapped line for our turn.
Because of fire codes a small limited amount of disabled guests are allowed on the ride at any given time.

The Safari ride at AK has a special HA jeep. Sometimes when the ride is a walk on for able bodied guests we have sat in the jeep for about 20 minutes waiting for more disabled guests because they want a full load. This September about 8-10 jeeps passed by us when we were in ours waiting.

The Little Mermaid show only has 8 HA spots. If more than 8 chairs are ahead me I need to wait for next show as I watch many able bodied guests who were way behind us enter to watch the current show.

So while some rides/attractions have less wait times others have longer and since most rides have mainstreamed lines I usually wait the same amount of time in those as you do.

Don't count on shorter waits, though.

All of the Fastpass lines and many of the other lines are wheelchair/ECV accessible, so wheelchair/ECV users wait in line with everyone else in the same lines for those attractions (that is called Mainstream Access). All of the attractions at AK and MGM were built with Mainstream Access. Because MK and Epcot were built much longer ago, before wheelchair access was thought of, some of the attractions there have regular entrances that are not accessible and DO have wheelchair entrances. As they renovated attractions, they added Mainstream Access if possible and wheelchair entrances are now the exception, rather than the rule.

Many people have posted that their experience was that for around 50% of attractions, their wait was the same as it would have been had they not been using an ECV/wheelchair. For about 20-25% of attractions, it was faster, but usually not that much faster. And for about 25-30% of the attractions, the wait was longer; sometimes much longer since some attractions have limited numbers of wheelchair 'spots' and there are also fire regulations regarding how many people with special needs may be in the building at one time.

Traveling for many years with one person using a wheelchair and another using an ECV, I that has pretty much been our experience too.

The disABILITIES FAQs thread has a lot of helpful information, including links to some past threads (the one about boarding in the third post of that thread may be helpful to you).
In general, if he can get out of the ECV and walk (even as little as 10 feet), he will be able to do a lot of things. What he might have trouble with depends on things like whether he can step down into a boat for boarding and back up again to get out (Pirates). The moving walkways on most rides can be slowed down or even stopped (exceptions are Peter Pan and the moving ramp that goes up to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority).

If he has not used an ECV before, I'd suggest a bit of practice before going out into traffic. He should feel comfortable turning in both directions, backing up and parallel parking. I would also suggest Epcot as a good first park to go to; it has a lot of open space and is not usually that congested. MK is about the worst; many of the walkways are fairly narrow and even during slow times, it's pretty congested. AK is also a hard park because most of the 'lands' have traffic going in both directions thru fairly narrow areas.

Thanks, Linda, for reminding folks about invisible disabilities. We have this issue as well, as dd-4 has a seizure disorder. What sets off her seizures? Extreme heat and big crowds (as well as other things) -- sound like one of our favorite vacation destinations?? One place where we are most cautious about this is for parade viewing...don't want her getting over-crowded viewing the parade, so her GAP allows us to be in HA areas for parade viewing (always more space there)....each and every time we get nasty looks and snide comments (because she is jumping up and down and waving to the characters, etc)!

...sorry...back on topic now...

OK...this is america...choices.....

Disney should put aside a certain amount of rooms
for SMOKING...

and certainly more rooms for non smoking....
WHY CANT DISNEY JUST GUARANTEE THIS

I like to occasionally smoke on vacation....
One should be able to guarantee
SMOKING OR NON SMOKING....

this way someone could have the OPTION....
of not going to that resort....if the accomodations were
not available....

MY guess DISNEY wants to trap you in the bubble...
once your there....your there
which is why people smoke in non smoking rooms....

after spending thousands they are certainly not going
to be going through withdrawal on vacation...

If you want put a slight surcharge for cleaning the
smoking rooms.....

BUT COME ON DISNEY PLEASE.....
I DONT CARE ABOUT THE VIEW....

JUST MAKE SOME ROOMS GUARANTEED SMOKING AND SOME NON...
seems simple enough

Our two non-smoking rooms had been smoked in. Thats the problem. There is no penality that I know of for the few who decide the rules do not apply to them..smjj

I agree it is a problem to have someone smoke in the non-smoking
rooms.....

I'm just saying I think Disney should make this a guaranteed
request on booking.....

yes some would break the rules.....
but i think smokers who dont want to break the rules....
will stay where they have a guaranteed smoking room....

But really, how could they do that? It would be a virtual booking nightmare, since the resort is designed for full occupancy at all times. Since roughly 20% if the population smokes, would you suggest that 20% of the rooms be dedicated smoking rooms? If so, how is Disney to know that exatly 20% of the people who wish to book on any given day will be smokers or non-smokers? The only way you could do that is to specifically book a particular unit for the trip, and that too would be a booking nightmare. My solution would be to keep the ratio of buildings as is, but make a significant penalty for smoking in the non-smoking units. Other timeshares and hotels do it, and so could Disney.

I haven't gone through all 67 pages of this thread, but here is my take, and maybe someone else has already said it. If you smoke, you should be able to find a place where you will not make anyone else sick when you smoke. Sure, it's a free country, smokers have their rights, and so on, But what of the folks who are so allergic to tobacco smoke that they literally become ill? what happens to that persons right to be healthy? If someone is "addicted" to smoking, do they have a right to make others suffer? Having a right is one thing, but when you are physically harming another human being, does it not make sense to perhaps avoid your habit around the general public?
Just a thought......

Very true. Also following up with the person you quoted: How can Disney guarantee smoking vs. non smoking rooms? Lets say they have 50 smoking roms at BCV, what if 60 smokers reserve rooms? Should they not let the person book a room at all or should they just do their best and hope the smoker follows the rule and does not smoke inside.

No...sorry....you're wrong.
While you're visiting WDW you CANNOT eat anything high in sodium, or fat. You MUST bath everyday and have NO body oder ... You also can not drink alocohlic beverages that land you in excess of socially acceptable limits...Oh....and if you use a refillable mug from a prior trip, or take a towel from a pool and take it to your room...you will be killed....ok? :)

PS/to add -- If you or any member of your party wears a perfume or after-shave lotion....you risk offending the medically sensitive and you will also be killed (Hope this helps! ;) )

I say let all DVC members vote on it.......and the majority wins.

I think "killing" would be a little excessive, maybe just a good old fashion flogging. They could put the whipping post over by Pirates of the Caribean in MK. You would have to dress like a pirate while being whipped. I think I'm liking this idea.pirate:

On a serious note if everyone follows the rules there will be no problem, sometimes you get the room you want sometimes you don't. Disney does their best to accomodate everyone but it's not always possible. If you get a ns room and need to smoke take a walk, if you see someone smoking while walking around don't whine, maybe their following the rules. Try being considerate and tolerant so we can all have a good vacation...

Well problem is this, 'smokers rights" honestly should be non existant cause the act of smoking is harming other people. Its known and studyed that second hand smoke is more deadly than the smoke the smoker is ingesting.

Im no flag waving non smoker , in fact I smoked for most my life, I quit cause i didnt want to get cancer, give it to my loved ones and kill them. Its everyones right to do what they want but when effect others , IMO, you lose that right.

Im all for designated smoking rooms cause if you dont have them smokers will just smoke up all the rooms and to leave that stink behind for the next family is just wrong, you may as well just use the carpet for a toilet.

If you must smoke there are plenty of smoking areas around the park and resorts for you to exercise that right to kill yourself and others around you, have a day with yourself. Sorry if this post is harsh, its all fact and im sorry if I hurt any feelings but maybe you should think about what your doing to yourself and others. Why? (puts on flame suit)
