This will be the first time that my hubby and I have been to Vegas. We are going to celebrate his BIG birthday! So not looking forward to the 11 1/2 hour flight but hey what can you do about that....

We have been given free tickets for 'LOVE':thumbsup2 but that is about all the planning that we, or should I say, I have done (and in fact it was done for us really). We are not planners at all and tend to just 'go with the flow and see what happens' kind of people. BUT having said that we do want to go and see the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam. Please can you tell me the best tour to book and should I wait to do it in Las Vegas or book it now? :confused3

Thank you:)

I'm curious about a Power Pass. I've never used it and can only offer it as a suggestion.

It does include a Hoover Dam tour that leaves a bit early.
It also has a Grand Canyon tour, but do note it's not to the National Park it is to a Indian Reservation http://www.grandcanyonskywalk.com/ . And while it it is something to see, it may not offer you the same views you expect from the Grand Canyon National Park.

Those two items though do put value in this pass.

err at the risk of being flamed i think perhaps you should read the tripadvisor reviews before going to the grandcanyonskywalk

we were going to go there but now ive read the reviews we are just going to the grand canyon national park and see what we can see without the skywalk

cheers

Ok I shall take a look, thank you. Didn't occur to me to look at Tripadvisor!

You can surely use that list as an attraction guide. But at the cost of the pass, most of those things are about $15 each except those two trips I pointed out, so I think it will take some work to get value out of it. Also most of those things aren't on the strip and without a car won't work out.

We just got back from Las Vegas. When planning, it helps to know:

-- What month are you going? (The weather varies greatly.)

-- How long will you be there?

-- Where are you staying?

-- Will you have a car?

We are going at the beginning of October for 7 nights to the Venetian and no we won't have a car.

Thank you all for your help.:)

Keep in mind, Vegas' public transit system is shoddy at best. There's busses(but they don't always run and don't go everywhere in town and a monorail that just runs most of the length of the strip(but doesn't stop on the strip and is often VERY confusing to find the boarding areas and is pretty expensive at around $25 for a 2 day pass). Your best bet if you want to go off the strip to say red rock or valley of fire or to see some of the other areas of Vegas is to rent a car even if it's just for a day or 2.

I know you have reservations at the Venetian for seven days but consider renting a car and spending a night at the Grand Canyon South Rim. We're going for our first trip to LV in September and that's what we are going to do. My sister went to LV a couple of years ago and took a bus tour to the south rim. She said that if she was able to do it over again, she would rent a car. A bus tour is an all day affair and she would have much rather rode in her own car.

I'd do this too. 7 days is a lot and spending one out of the city will be a good idea.

The weather in October is wonderful -- it's typically very pleasant during the day and evening. At that time of year, it's not too hot to walk around. The Venetian has a nice location, and there's plenty to see and do within easy walking (or bus/taxi) distance.

With 7 nights, I would consider an out-of-town day-trip or two -- or even an overnight trip.

I can understand if you don't want to rent a car. I once went to Las Vegas with a friend from the U.K. He could not get used to being on the righthand side of the road. You might be more comfortable with taking buses, taxis and coach tours.

Try to eat at Mon Ami Gabi in Paris Hotel & Casino. The outside portion overlooks the Belliago so you can watch the water show if you get an outside table.
Oh and the food was good too:) We've eaten there on every trip.
We took 2 Hoover Dam trips by one of the tour bus companies(not on the same trip tho). A half day trip to the Hoover Dam and an almost full day one that include a boat ride on Lake Mead(and a medicore lunch). My advice would be to take the half day one.
