Thought it was time for an update on Mom since we have made certain decisions and Mom's condition has changed a bit.

On Monday we had asked that her Pulmonary Specialist be brought in to assess her abilities to breath on her own, as we were told that she would have to have a tracheotomy and the decision had to be made within 2 days :scared1: Well, the Dr. came in, checked her out, removed the breathing tube and Mom did GREAT and is continuing on just 3 liters of oxygen. :thumbsup2 Dad and I have made the decision to just give Mom "palative" care, basically giving her morphine to comfort her and that is all. We are not going to subject her to another breathing tube being put in place or any other type of breathing assistance, besides the oxygen she gets through the nose.

*We were later told that "palative care" essentially means they would remove her feeding tube, stop TPN, antibiotics, and IV solution.* Well, Dad told them that we just wanted her to be made comfortable and to keep giving her whatever she was getting.

I did talk to her private Neurologist and she said that Mom does squeeze her hand on command, at times. Seems her ability to do things on command are an extreme hit or miss situation. However, Mom stretched her arms out and up while yawning, even the left arm, but we were told her left side was paralyzed. Again, this is a hit and miss situation. They moved Mom out of ICU over to the Acute-Multi Care Unit and is still being given antibiotics for the MRSA Staph, have her on TPN, she has a feeding tube, and is just being given oxygen through a nasal cannula.

When Dad and I go into to see her, I always watch the monitors to see how her respirations, heart, pulse, and blood pressure are doing and when Dad talks to her, her heart rate and respirations going up just a bit. This was explained to us as her recognizing Dad's or my voice. She may only understand a few words, every fifth word, or just recognize the voice, but we will never know for sure because their is no test for cognitive understanding and her Neurologist is even unable to tell us how much she is understanding, ONLY that she DOES hear us.

When we went in today, the nurse discussed with us whether we wanted to allow them to insert the feeding tube through her skin into her stomach and explained that the tube in her nose for feeding was not meant to stay there forever. So, sometime tomorrow they will insert a tube down into her stomach, place a wire down through the tube and up and out through the skin in her abdomen, and then pull the feeding tube through.

I truly think that we made the right decision in giving her the morphine to comfort her, as her breathing is NOT so labored now and I think it will give her body a bit of a rest and allow it to get stronger/healthier.

Dad is still having a really hard time with this and probably will for quite some time, so I will be going over on some nights just to watch TV with him or even just to talk. On Tuesday night, I made a vegetarian lasagna and hubby and I went over and had dinner with him and then went to the hospital to see Mom. We were not even there 5 minutes when all of a sudden the place started shaking :scared: It registered pretty quickly with us that we had just had an earthquake and were also a little baffled, as we are about 90 miles from the Bay Area/San Francisco area. I thought it was pretty cool, as growing up in the Bay Area, I absolutely *LOVED* it when we had earthquakes

So that is the scoop as of today. My Dad and I thank everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers for my Mom and us, and we know that miracles through prayer are what Mom has been receiving. I think a bit of her stubbornness is helping her through as well :rotfl: :rotfl:

With much  and

Stubbornness can go a long way in proving doctors wrong. Glad you and dad found a choice you are content with.

Wow your mom is a fighter. I am glad the morphine is helping. Even though it is hit and miss on her following comands. She is there. And she knows when you are. Love is a feeling not words. She feels your love.

I will continue to keep your family in my prayers.

Im glad she is doing better.

I wonder what people think when they are how your Mom's is.

I had wanted to wait to give another update on Mom until we had a meeting with all of her Doctors, the Hospital Ethics Doctor, Social Services, and Risk Management, as they all had *SERIOUS* concerns that we were violating Mom's Advance Directive and were threatening to turn it over to the Legal Department. Well, we had the meeting today and it went FANTASTIC :woohoo:

Since Saturday Mom has gone from following commands intermittently to ALL THE TIME !! Yesterday her nurse was in changing her bed with the help of another nurse and Mom SPOKE !! Her nurse asked her helper if she had heard Mom and she said yes. They were not sure what she had said, but she did say something. Then while hubby went grocery shopping yesterday afternoon, I went in to see Mom and her nurse asked if I would mind if she tried to see with Mom could swallow a little bit of water, and I said "Sure, go for it!" Well, Mom swallowed the water and did not *inhale* it into her lungs :cool1:

So, after this mornings meeting with everyone, they were ALL in agreement that within the last 36 hrs Mom has made some huge strides towards getting better. After the meeting Dad and I went in to see Mom and she was staring at me so intently that just to be funny I asked her if she was staring at my grey hair? Her response was to shake her head "No" and then she said "your eyes!" :yay: Then the hospital Pastor stopped by and from the doorway he said "Good Morning," so Mom turned her head towards the door and said "Good Morning." :woohoo: :woohoo:

She is going to have a swallowing evaluation done today to see if she might be able to start having some pureed foods or even some liquids by mouth and Physical Therapy is going to do an evaluation and start working with her everyday. However, her Doctor did say that even if she does NOT pass the swallowing evaluation today, does not mean that she will not pass it in a few days. So it looks like everyone feels that Mom should be given everything that she needs to try and work towards a full or close to full recovery, even though she may never be able to walk again.

I have always known that Mom is a fighter, or as I say "stubborn", but to go from a *GRIM* prognosis to a *FAIR*, as of right now, you can never count her down and out. :goodvibes

Again, my Dad and I thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts and prayers and just know that God has listened to them and is helping Mom to get back to being her old self.

 and
Lyn

NEWSFLASH

Mom's nurse just called Dad, 2:15pm PST, and said that Mom ate an ENTIRE tray of pureed foods :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

My guess is she was looking at the sparkle that must have been in your eyes when you saw her improvement.

Hugs!

(not saying your thing is bad or anything or taking attention but I am kinda knowing how it feels. My dog had a sezure and could not move last night. The animal hospital people came and said she was on the edge of death. They dont know how but she recovered and should be coming home tomorrow.)

Thank you so much Taz for your continued support :goodvibes Glad to hear that your dog is doing so much better :thumbsup2 It is really difficult to say how any living being will recover after having a seizure, as there are numerous reasons for having a seizure, as well as numerous causes. Just accept it as a miracle and never give up :goodvibes
