What Thanksgiving side dishes are usually at your table?

Mashed potatoes
gravy
one stuffing with onions and celery and one without
cranberry sauce
mashed sweet potatoes
squash
corn
peas

pie of some kind...maybe berry this year with ice cream

Candied sweet potatoes
Stuffing
Mashed potatoes
Gravy
Cranberry Sauce
Some type of green vegetable (probably sauteed green beans)
Corn

Dessert: Apple and pumpkin pie. Real whipped cream & vanilla ice cream.

Everything homemade (except the ice cream). OK, the pumpkin is canned, because who has time to roast pumpkin for a pie?

First, I'm southern, and holiday meals are for a large group with some vegans included, so there are an insane number of items, but these are family favorites included for both thanksgiving and xmas:

roasted brussels
mashed potatoes
corn souffle? - its not really, but it's amazing, whatever she calls it
green leafy salad
breads
roasted butter nut squash
artichokes
smoked turkey
ham or boston butt (at xmas we have salmon and beef tenderloin)
gravy
cornbread dressing
spinach with cheese and mushrooms (i have no idea what this dish is actually called, but that's what it includes)
spinach with almonds
cranberry sauce
green beans
turnip, parsnip, leek dish
a metric buttload of desserts
(ETA: there's always a vegan pasta dish for a side, and to make more choices for them)

@IAHFTPT - don't forget to break the pieces off one at a time. How are we still laughing about this? I think about that thread often now when dining out!:rotfl2:

Some things are standard:

Appetizers:
Cheeseball with crackers, shrimp cocktail, veggie tray

Turkey!! (not a side, I know, but since the discussion has grown)

Sides:

stuffing/dressing (usually some in the bird and some baked separately)
either green bean casserole or the same thing made with peas (DH and his brother take turns having their favorite)
cheesy potatoes (DH's aunt makes them)
mashed potatoes & gravy
some sort of sweet potatoes or yams
cranberry sauce (usually canned, which I like!)
rolls

Desserts:
apple and pumpkin pie

Some things vary:

Sides:
There are always a couple of different vegetables - corn, Brussels sprouts, asparagus...whatever recipes anyone is excited about that year.

Desserts:
Anything goes! Sometimes there is a third type of pie, or sometimes cake, quite often some sort of cheesecake, occasionally cookies...

(We separate dessert & coffee from the main meal, so people have time to be hungry again.)

Lovely menus, all!
Nice to see that so many celebrate this first of the season holiday in ways that give them and their families comfort:cool:.

This year we're going out to eat, but our traditional Thanksgiving meal includes:

Turkey
ham (some years)
garlic mashed potatoes, homemade
stuffing
mixed veggies
lime Jello with fruit cocktail
rolls
gravy
cranberry sauce (canned)
Yams
Ambrosia

Dessert: pie and apple pies

I think we should have a huge DIS meet the next day and everyone bring their yummy leftover side dishes........unless of course you're shopping!! :teeth:

My husband is allergic to dairy so besides the jellied cranberry sauce and green beans I found some great recipes for cornbread muffins, crockpot stuffing, sweet potato casserole, and pumpkin pie.

I make dairy free pumpkin pie by substituting coconut milk. I also cut down cinnamon (because i hate it) and use nutmeg and cardamom and ginger. It's unusual but really good.

Since we're talking deserts, it's not thanksgiving without Nantucket cranberry pie.

Appetizers vary, but always cheese/crackers, roasted tomato dunk w/baguette, lipton onion dip w/chips... sometimes shrimp, sometime guacamole, often a veggie tray.

Dinner:
Soup- usually butternut squash, sometimes french onion
Turkey
Stuffing AND dressing- traditional recipe with onion, celery, carrot, bread, sage, some in the turkey and some in a casserole dish.
GRAVY. Often we have to be reminded that it's a condiment, not a beverage!
Mashed potatoes
Sometimes baked sweet potatoes
Green bean casserole
Roasted winter veggies- carrots, onion, parsnips, sweet potato, Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, sometimes rutabaga.
"Cup" salad- mandarins, pineapple, coconut, marshmallows, sour cream... dream whip?
Cranberry sauce- the jellied kind from the can, with the lines!
Sometimes wild rice salad... rice, cranberries, parsley, roasted pecans
Rolls

Desserts:
Apple pie or apple crisp
Pumpkin pie
Sometimes pecan pie
Sometimes Indian pudding
Sometimes berry pie
Rarely mincemeat pie, as I am the only one who enjoys it
Sometimes chocolate cake
Ice cream
(yes, we get carried away on the desserts!)

Turkey
Stuffing(homemade)
Mashed Potatoes(homemade)
Corn
Green Beans
Gravy
Sweet Potatoes

Canned Jellied Cranberry Sauce (dad and DBF are only ones that eat it so mom gets them each their own can lol!)

Dessert:
Chocolate pudding pie
Pumpkin pie
Fruit pie (either cherry or blueberry usually)

Turkey
Ham
Stuffing
Mashed Potatoes
Sweet potato casserole (with marshmallow topping)
asparagus
buttered corn
watergate salad
veggie tray
yeast rolls
cranberry sauce
gravy (at least three gravy boats on the table at all times!)

Making notes for Christmas. Although shame on whoever mentioned pecan pie - I'm craving it now. I *could* make it if I run to the shops and buy some pecans....

I found some Eliot's brand pecans that look AMAZING!
Expensive, but I bought two bags.

My husband buys nuts that he eats with his breakfast and takes in his lunch.
The usual old, dark brown, dried up pecans you usually find in the stores are just not good!

I live in the South, and one year there was a truck set-up selling big sacks of fresh Georgia Pecans.
They were SO good!

I can't wait to make us a Pecan Pie.

I just looked up watergate salad...is it good? Also, TOTALLY not what I was expecting!

mashed potatoes and gravy
sometimes I make carrots if I am in the mood for them
stuffing
swiss corn
sautéed brussel sprouts with bacon and shallots
dinner rolls
cranberry sauce

One large or two small turkeys
Ham, this year we are smoking a ham (we did a trial this week and it was amazing)
Mac and Cheese
Watergate salad
Cranberries, 2 or 3 ways
Orange Jello with mandarin oranges in it
Mashed potatoes
Yams
stuffing
Some veggie, I always mix it up, last year I did a gingered Green bean.
Homemade gravy, and I know how to make gravy (never lumpy...always yummy)
Dinner rolls
corn bread
Pumpkin pie sometimes an apple and then my mom will make a few cream pies.

We usually host anywhere from 8-15 people so we feel we need a pretty good amount of food. We usually do more of a late lunch, so we don't do any apps outside of maybe a veggie tray
