As for crowds...since this ride opened, it has always been “something.” It’s the initial wave of fans... then holiday crowds... then New Years... then AP blackouts in or not in effect... then the marathon weekend, then MLK, then Pres Day weekend, then Spring Break....at some point CM blackouts will be lifted... etc, etc. Disney is a never ending string of “something” that impacts crowds every day of the year.

Three years later there’s not that much of a rope drop experience difference for FoP or even 7DMT.

Sure seasons and holidays will impact things on the margins. Just not sure if it’s going to impact RotR to a material degree.
First, @GADisneyDad14, I'm so glad you got to ride yesterday! I wasn't on the DIS yesterday afternoon and raced through the thread this morning, hoping to see that your BG had been called.

Next, I agree with you. I don't think the excitement for RotR is going to die down anytime soon. In fact, I rather expect it to increase as more and more people learn about it.

Still, I'll be surprised, although not shocked, if they go to a FP+ system for this ride in the foreseeable future, because, unless there's something about FP+ I don't understand, going to FP+ for this ride would crush the possibility of riding for anyone not staying onsite for maybe 7 days or more and create a standby line of epic duration--worse than the worst of FoP standby, which I saw at close to 6 hours a few trips ago (maybe 2 years ago?). RotR would have 8+ hour standby lines. At least. For those of you who haven't experienced RotR yet and are wondering why I'm saying this--RotR is a unique experience unlike anything else in any WDW park.

So, for myself, I would much rather get to the park early, hope the app gods were on my side, and get a BG than stand in an hours-long standby line or be shut out of FP+s 60+7 days in advance.

I consider ourselves very fortunate that my family of 3 was able to get BG 23 on dec 20th and BG 10 on Dec 23 .
I had been worried about Christmas crowds. We did not experience any of the issues I have been reading about. I hope that all of you get to ride.
A big thank you to all of you who paved the way with your knowledge. So appreciated.

on Jan 2, it was packed. I was in the park at 6:47, I will assume the line for RD was in the normal spots. The crowds were almost to the ticket gates. I’m sure once the holiday crowds leave it will be better. NYE morning was empty compared to Jan 2. We were in the park by 5:30 and found seating across from Starbucks. Probably people were sleeping in expecting to stay out late for the parties.

Is there a specific technical reason to expect a non-current mobile phone to perform poorly? I will be in a one-phone situation with an Android v.7 using Tracfone over MLK weekend. The phone supposedly uses 4G LTE, which I thought was pretty reasonable...but I guess one way or another I'm going to find out. :scared:

This is exactly what I was afraid of when they went to the new system. There are not enough boarding groups for all the people logging in at 7. If I was them, I would go back to the old VQ method where you can join a BG right when you enter the park...but I know they won’t.

That was my fear as well and I said the one thing that could cause this to fail is if people in the park by opening cannot get a BG. However, I also realize that with any system, you're going to have problems this week. I think starting next Monday we'll see how it goes. I'd highly suspect that we'll see something closer to what we saw prior to the madness where most everyone in the park at opening was able to get a BG in the 50s or 60s and that backups won't start for at least 20-30 minutes. We'll see soon.

And what I’m hearing from cast members is that due to New Year’s being in the middle of the week, people haven’t gone home yet, like they normally would after NYE if it were around a weekend. So the worst of the crowds should start to ease a bit this weekend as people head home. It remains to be seen how other busy times (marathon, MLK, Pres weekend) will be.
Do you have past experience of how MLK is as I’ll be at HS on the Sunday. Is it as bad as New Years or Xmas?

When we were there for Xmas week we were anticipating huge insane crowds. Perhaps being DLR regulars....it felt like a typical summer weekend for us..
It's all about perspective I suppose😁.

On the 26th, I used an iPhone 8+ and secured BG 35. It was the BG system that didn’t recognize my DH and DD but they were quickly added by a GET CM.

We only used 1 phone because DD felt there was no reason to use more than 1 to access the same info as the system would be taxed by the # of phone users. We turned off WiFi because DD, a CM, hates Studios’ WiFi.

Be sure to station yourself so you’re in an area with strong reception. I had 4 bars and was not blocked by any buildings.

This seems unsustainable. I wonder if they’d be better off dropping the backup groups and opening standby after the regular groups are done.

I still feel like we need to wait for holiday crowds to drop off. I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying that I'd like to see a larger data-set of "non-Christmas" crowds before I'd make a final judgment.

I’m also thinking of Disneyland, where a 1 hour early entry is a stated benefit on nearly all 3+ day PH tickets.

Holy smokes how are they going to handle that?!??!

😳
Simple. They Don't open GE for EMH anyways so don't drop BGs until regular opening. The trick is allowing people in early through the turnstiles and holding them at central hub for the drop. IMHO, would allow both sides to open 30min prior to get them through the bottleneck of the turnstiles

SWGE is not open for EMH at Disneyland, only Fantasyland and Tomorrowland are open. So my guess is that the boarding groups will open for all when the park officially opens.
Oh man. I am picturing a lot of phones getting lost on Space Mountain as people try to get their VQ spot in line.

Soooo I just had to give a family member a crash course on ROTR, BG, and also all things Disney as they are going last minute next week (over marathon weekend 🤦🏻‍♀️) and have not been in at least 10 years.

Do we think Saturday or a Sunday next weekend is better for ROTR, should they decide to attempt it? Asking incase there’s actually a reason to pick one or the other and it isn’t a crapshoot lol. The 7 AM opening Saturday and 8 AM the next has me questioning. I assumed they should avoid Epcot Sunday so I’m leaning towards DHS then?
