If the flattening isn't working is it time to face reality?

Ummm, I don't see folks saying don't worry about money.

What I do see is over and over a decent number of folks understand what it will mean if we ignore the danger that nurses, doctors, respiratory therapist and other critical heath care workers are currently experiencing. They are fighting everyday on the front lines.

Making it worse for them is a pathetic goal.

Then you haven't been paying attention.

IMO an awful lot of people are hung up on the numbers not being "bad" enough to justify the protective measures. It can seem insignificant if you simply look at 1,300 +cases in a state and 15 deaths and don 't really feel like that's particularly menacing.

Now consider many, many cases aren't being tested at all because they're not presenting as serious enough, and some may be flying under the radar completely because they are simply asymptomatic carriers. Then consider this same statistic about the same state -- 40% of cases are in the younger population. It's common for those who recover to have reduced lung function. It's wonderful they recovered certainly, but reduced lung function isn't insignificant.

I think that, to borrow a phrase that came up on another thread, the demographics of the DIS makes it hard for people to see this perspective, because people dying for lack of money or health care probably isn't a reality in most DISers lives. But it is the case for a lot of people in this country, so I can't really condemn them for their thinking. Tens of thousands of people die of preventable causes in this country for lack of health insurance every year, and anything that causes the levels of unemployment this is going to cause is going to increase those numbers dramatically.
Sorry, but these people are not going to be better off in a society that just lets people die. They are already at risk because not enough care about the poor. We can't let our society run forward into a future in which we let millions die to preserve jobs. No one who isn't uber wealthy is safe in such a society.

So how do we ensure that after this we don't have even more poor people?

Preserving, or really saving the economy It isn't just about corporations, it's about the people they employ.
Without those jobs how do they survive?

If I could like this post one million times, I would. Every time I see a post that basically says don't worry about money, I wonder if the poster is even aware of how privileged they sound.
So you support letting millions die to preserve the economy? I am not sure what you are saying?

Sheesh, why is it that every coronavirus thread devolves into, "You just want Grandma to die so that you can go to Buffalo Wild Wings with your buddies"

People need to keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of anyone who catches this virus lives. Only 7% require hospitalization. The overwhelming majority who catch it do not even experience symptoms or very mild symptoms.

99.6% of every person who catches this virus will live to tell about it. So yes, let's try this flattening thing to see if that works. If it does great, but if it doesn't it is time to get back to reality.

Unless you know of some magical tree that grows it, it has to come from somewhere, i.e PEOPLE working.

Sorry - there are American leaders actively saying that now. It is real. Don't just try and shush it like folks here are making it up.

What American leader has said they want your Grandmother dead so they can get some wings a Bdubs?
If you aren't making it up, please provide a link to said it.

Exactly. Saying things like "people just want to buy an X Box" completely belittles people's very real fears of being homeless at the end of this.
