Covid 19 WBPC cruise

Two cruises ago I threw up in a public area, and a cast member checked up on me. It was just food allergies (I tend to be stubborn), and I told her so along with apologizing for making a mess. That evening, I got a call from another cast member checking up on me to make sure I really wasn't sick.

Hmm, maybe they gave you a "pass" because of concierge? Or maybe they are a bit stricter when kids' club is involved. I know that when my coworker cruised last year (before all this), her child came down with a bug mid-cruise and the kids club staff noticed they were a bit droopy and took their temperature, and because of the fever, they were quarantined for the rest of the cruise. So they did enforce this at least some times, because that was April 2019 before anything covid-related.

My DH was also quarantined when he got sick, although we called the medical center right away as soon as he fell ill. The instructions in the navigator are pretty broad--they just say to contact the health center "should anyone in party become ill." But we are lawyers so probably a bit more "rules oriented" than some. My guess is that the average person doesn't even read the "IMPORTANT INFORMATION" section in the navigator, much less follow the rules therein. If they did, for one thing, they'd know there is no seat saving, but we all know how poorly that rule is followed...

Yes, it was because of the kids club that they had to make sure.

My dad got quarantined on last year's WBPC the day of the crossing!! He and my mom and sister had dinner at Palo the night before Caratgena - so super rich food combined with the heat on their excursion in Cartagena and he got sick on the excursion (he can also get car sick - but not seasick - so if they were further back in the bus that could have added to it). They followed the rules and went to medical on their return - though no one from the tour escorted him there, so it was honor system. Even the medical staff said that it was 99% for sure the combination of the rich food and the heat, but still by rules they had to quarantine him. He was in the cabin for 24 hours and got sprung in time to be on deck for the final lock.

I never knew they were supposed to..? I was VERY sick a couple of years ago on a cruise (felt perfectly fine for the first few days but started getting sick during) and trust me, the staff all knew I wasn't feeling well. My host had a harder time getting in to the stateroom to clean as I just wanted to sleep and keep my cough to myself, the waitstaff was bringing me bland food and plain vanilla ice cream, heck the concierge hosts gave me their own stash of theraflu. Not one of them reported me. :confused3 I did end up going to the infirmary when I developed conjunctivitis on top of my bad cold and they werent interested at all in any of my syptoms aside from my eyes which I had gone down there for.

Obviously I assume this has now changed and they'll be more quick to assist the ill.

I thought verified throw ups (as seen by the staff) were supposed to be reported due to norovirus possibility whereas general "not feeling well" isnt really something that needs to be reported (back then anyway). That was where my surprise was.

Haven't been on the forum for a bit, dealing with life and other issues.
We were on this cruise and just reading thru this thread.
We self quarantined for 14 days after arriving back in Canada, and thankfully no symptoms for CV.

But I'm curious... to the others on this cruise:

- Did the **other** group for this cruise shut down the page? (rhymes with vase-nook)
I was a member and the group page seems to have disappeared, or was closed.

If so, either vasenook is supressing info related to this cruise, or the admins decided to shut it down.
I'm thinking even DCL might have something to do with this..

There seems to be some info suppression.
If you google this cruise, there hardly is any information related to the covid situation.

No, the group is still active.

My daughter threw up in the kids club the first night of our trip in February because she was crying for us and started coughing and gagging. We were told we had to visit the ship doctor to be cleared before she could go back to the kids club. The next morning we also got a slip under our door telling us the same thing and the concierge hosts mentioned it to us as well. But we were not quarantined or banned from anywhere except the kids club.

We did visit the health center to get our slip clearing us and they didn’t do anything except ask me if she was feeling better. No temperature check or anything else. Literally just took my word for it.

And we are in allergy season and many of the symptoms are similar. People can be asthmatic and cough. Coughing is not a telltale sign. Even if they were "mingling" what is to stop someone from saying it is allergies? There are no fully universal symptoms of this - I know people who have had fever for days (they were presumptive as they were not able to be tested) and others who were tested and had no fever, so that's not a foolproof thing. Until there is a rapid test and everyone's freedom is given up and medical is cramming things up everyone's nose, we sadly have to rely on people being honest.

This. I was one the cruise too and was dealing with asthma exacerbated by allergy season and was coughing on and off throughout the cruise. I was definitely self conscious about it.

The group is still very much active. The admins removed some pertinent posts relating to discussion on the virus because one unscrupulous member of the group took screen shot of some of the discussion that included personal information and shared it with the press.

That was our experience too. My 4 year old randomly threw up at dinner (we think he got too much sun). We immediately left (he missed Halloween festivities which was crushing) but was fine after a couple hours. I guess the waitstaff notified the kids club and we received a slip that required him to get “cleared” by the health center before going back to the club. We took him the next morning and they took his temp and signed the form. No quarantine. But I do recommend taking a picture of the signed form. We had trouble checking him in later in day. The clearance in the system wasn’t entered properly by the other counselor so the picture came in handy.

While I understand the point that if no one has reported to medical then they can choose to say no symptoms aboard. But medical doesnt exist in a vacuum, staff and officers are mingling with the passengers and I am sure coughs were heard. And wouldnt it have been wonderful if they had been just a little proactive and had them mingling a little extra with the passengers to be on the lookout for symptomatic passengers.

@Dug720 It's not that I dont believe you but I just find it unbelievable that the waitstaff didnt report that family. Its not like there is open seating, they know who it was.

I get that sick people should go to medical but not every case of a kid throwing up is a sickness that requires medical or quarantine. Sometimes kids (and adults) get upset stomachs by overeating or overindulging in foods they are not used to. Even the motion of the ship can cause some to throw up. I think it is a tough call for a server to report every instance.

Going forward with the virus now I can see every sneeze and cough getting the evil eye from people.

Not only the press, but also the "cruise lawyers" website. Admins took proper steps to protect privacy (and yes, i know posting on FB you should have no expectation of privacy, however....)

mmm...interesting... this is the message I get...

Or they may have kicked me out (I don't see why since I don't think I ever posted anything more than a couple of smilies and liked a few
replies)... but even when I do a search on the website's box, the page doesn't come up at all.

Then you got removed for not being active.

I dont think its over reaching for CMs to report vomits to medical. It seems like its super easy to clear up if you still want your kid to participate in the clubs but it just might give some parents pause and that might help curb an outbreak.

And I *so* get every vomit isnt noro...I have Crohn's and I am also a longstanding vegetarian. The Crohn's can leave me nauseous more often than not at times and let's just say I find "hidden" meat by throwing it up about an hour after consumption. Provided I wasnt charged for the visit Id have no issue reporting to medical to explain any public purgings.

The bottom line with it though is BECAUSE of illness or overeating or the like, anyone could say it is that. It's far better to have medical clear them - or as they did with my dad even when they were 99% sure it was rich food and heat with a touch of car sickness - quarantine for 24 hours. If no further events, you're good to go. But just because you think it's something not contagious, it's not really fair of you to make that call if you ro a kid throws up and possibly spread something.

And yes, even NOT on a ship you get the evil eye for sneezing or sniffling or coughing around here - even on the street way more than 6 feet from someone.

I'm not active either in the 3 other group pages from previous cruises at all and I'm not removed from those.
Weird but oh well.
Did your previous groups have people broadcasting private medical information on other websites like has happened earlier on this thread? I doubt it, and I hope those admins would also act to protect members if it turned out someone was spreading around sensitive information from those groups.

We had a couple of conversations with different areas of DCL to report my husband and myself having tested positive. The “top” person we talked to said they are monitoring Facebook. I do not have Facebook, so I have not participated, but I was curious how they are monitoring it if the groups are private. Just an FYI.

That's because admins cleaned up the group, removing inactive members and members who did not end up cruising with us.
