July5,2003 Magic...who's going?

Of course, with a last name of Canetti, she might fit in better with the Catholic school :teeth: [/B]

Far be it from ME to EVER ask where the name came from, but now that YOU mention it, I've always wondered........Will you kindly deign to enlighten us?!?

My family goes back to 15th century Spain. They came from a town called Canete in the Cuenca province.

Sandy,
Interesting history....we just thought that perhaps your father was Italian and your mother was Jewish and had the stronger religious background and therefore raised you in the Jewish faith...little did we know Spain was involved.

Jay's family goes way back to the earliest settlers in East Hampton...of course on his maternal side they were from Norway, matter of fact his mother came through Ellis Island when she was 3.

Hi,
Jeanne,

Most university courses are for 3 years ,but Gary is doing a 4 year masters course. He may specialise in Astrophysics in the final year.It does seem a bit quiet around the house now that Gary has gone, and we have the time all to ourselves.

Sandy,
you mention that Sara may spend a semester at Sunderland University,I have not heard much about it.I think it will be quite cold there as it is in the North. If you pass by London you must visit us,you are welcome any time.

By the way very impressed with the photos and hope that the venture takes off well

Ashley

With the final vowel being an "i", I would have also guessed Italian, but we all know how things get modified over the years.
Sounds like a fascinating heritage....have you ever been to visit the mother region? I have so many different European strains in my own lineage that I just consider myself true "melting pot".

I've learned that when it comes to Sephardic genealogy, spelling is meaningless. It is influenced by the country of residence. In Turkey, where the hard 'C' sound is only represented by a K, the name was spelled Kaneti. The Canetti spelling was more or less influenced by arrival in Ellis Island and the immigration officials spelling the name the way it sounded to them.

Ashley, I figured it'd be cold. Sunderland is up near Newcastle and I don't know if Sara knows what cold is yet :) The only thing I know, is if I come over to visit her, she better be able to get me tickets to a local match. Newcastle would be great, but I'll take the local club. It would have been better last year, when one of our American Internationals was playing there.

First Ashley, congrats this is really wonderful news. Having a child looking a colleges now I realize what an honor this is.

Jeanne, I'm with Wendy dead jealous of your trip. I was trying for that one (but the boss wants me here) Any chance you two will be going to the ASCRS in San Diego in May? We could have some serious fun together for a day;) I am thinking about adding a few day at Disneyland after the convention, we could have even more fun there!!!!

Looks like we will in NYC for the Macy's parade. Celebrating in NJ with our "family of choice" so we decided to do a in the Big Apple on Wed. I was looking at tix for "Wicked" which looks like lots of fun but as you can imagion there is nothing available for the day before Thanksgiving. I guess we will try rush and see's what available.

Sandy, good luck with your new venture. The pics are amazing.

Hi Denise,
great to hear from you again. The letters you mentioned (ASCRS)don't ring a bell with me. Since John is now in solo practice, he can pretty much do any trip he wants as long as it's related to his field. Let me know the general details and I can check it out. Offhand, I'm thinking that May is probably not a good month to travel since we'll have 3 graduations (HS, college and grad school) in addition to moving Jen back home. San Diego is such a great city.....just love all those Mexican restaurants in Old Town.

Is this your first time seeing the Macy's parade live? If so, you're gonna love it. Hmmm, so "Wicked is already sold out.....did you try the Wednesday matinee? The evening shows usually go first.
What about "Aida"? That's always been a favorite of mine. There's lots of good stuff out there right now. You can try TKTS in Times Square for same day greatly reduced tickets , but you'll have to pay with cash and may end up sitting separately all over the theatre. Pick up a copy of the NY Times (B&N and Borders always carry it) and you'll get to see in a nutshell what's currently playing. While you're whooping it up in NY I'll be slaving over a hot stove......my 2 NY sisters and their families are coming to NC for Thanksgiving dinner!

Hi Jeanne

ASCRS is the academy of cataract and refractive surgeons. They have a web site I think it's ASCRS.com The only graduation we have is set for June 5th. With an outdoor Now all we have to worry about is the 17 year locust!

We'll take cash and do the TKTS thing and see what we get. As long as it's a musical most of the family will be happy.

We have done Macy's once before, Chelsea was in the parade in 2000. So I'll be ready for the cold and the long wait.
You can take heart that while you are nice and warm over that stove I'll be shivering.

Isn't the big one coming up soon?!?

Denise: Yeah, but you'll be having fun and I'll be cursing all the little no-neck monsters under my breath!
John only does retina and vitreous...in fact, he refers all the C&R stuff out, so that trip isn't an option for us.
BTW, we'll be somewhat in your neck of the woods this Saturday.
Jen has a swim meet against Navy and since we've never visited Annapolis, we decided to drive up. It's going to be another whirlwind trip (seems that's all I have these days). We plan to leave early Saturday morning to catch the 12 noon start. Jenni's had a bad bout of homesickness lately so her coach is letting her spend the night with us (as opposed to going back on the team bus) and she'll return the next morning with another teammate and her mom. They have family in the Annapolis area, so the coach is graciously giving both girls permission to stay. I think Jen plans for us to have dinner with them as we have never met the other girl's mom. We're staying at the Mariott Residence Inn for one night. I don't know if that's anywhere near you, but if it is, maybe you and Andy can meet us for a drink. Unfortunately, it will not be a conch cooler......

Actually, since speaking with an advisor, I've changed from looking at University of Sunderland to Brunel University in London. Since it's not as far north, I'm guessing it won't be as cold, but apparently it might get a bit foggy!:p And dad, how did I guess that if you came to visit me in England, that it would somehow coincide with a soccer game? :scratchin

Sara,
Brunel sounds like a much more sensible choice.
Sorry to disappoint you but we dont get fogs any more in London since the air was cleaned up about 20 years ago.We also dont get much rain now. This summer it didnt rain much either the driest since resords began ,so these days rainy London is also a myth.

If you go to brunel and live in London you will have a ball ,so many things to do.

Sandy,
Now you will have a chance to see some good UK soccer teams and an excuse for visiting London,Sara will have to get busy Buying tickets so I suggest you persuade her London is best.

As you know in London we have:-
Tottenham Hotspur
Chelsea
Arsenal
Fulham
Leyton orient
Charlton
Queens park Rangers
Watford-(which is probably the nearest to Brunel)
Wimbledon

On a more serious note brunel is rated as a much better university than Sunderland in the UK.

Ashley

Well, being a big Spurs fan, London makes me happier too. Now, the only question is, how tough is it to get tickets to White Heart Lane?

I dont think it is so difficult except for the really big matches (i.e. with Arsenal or manchester United).
Unfortunately Tottenham are not doing so well now.

Jeanne and Sandy: It's good to see everyone on the boards. I haven't been on in a while. We won't be doing a cruise this year but are planning a july 2005 eastern with Anna S. Had a busy fall- my son is a freshmen at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fl. just got back from visiting him for parents weekend. Going to Hilton Head for Thanksgiving- first time to dvc there. Can't wait!Saw on the boards some changes to tne Magic- heard the new show is terrific Happy Birthday Sandy- My daughter's and my husband's birthday are both Nov 7so we have quite a celebration.

Hi Wendy,
Great to hear from you again. Any way you can pull some strings and join us next summer? 8/7 is basically an Eastern itinerary. I promised myself I wouldn't begin posting until 6 months before the cruise.......what a joke that was! Tell Anna to pop in and say hello also. Please say hi to your folks for me.
Jeanne

Minniemart _ congratulations on joining DVc. I know when I talked to you on the ship youwere pretty sure you were going to do it I'm glad you did. My son left for college also- he went to St Augustine 'Fla. I found it very hard leaving him behind- i cried the whole way home and then some. Just visited him this past weekend. He loves it there. St. Augustine is beautiful. we're going to Hilton Head for Thanksgiving-have never been there -can't wait
Where is your home resort? We own at Boardwalk and Vero Beach. Both are great.

Jeanne, PM me! Andy and I are taking a day off together tomorrow so I'll be able to get online at home (for a change). If you aren't doing dinner at your daughter's friends let me recommend a call to Northwoods. It's our fav. Annapolis dining spot.

Wendy, if you are doing Disney again, Andy and I will be doing a silver anniversary cruise whatever week July 11th falls on. Too bad they don't do vow renewals on Castaway. . . .
