Priscilla,
Please post a trip report somewhere about RCCL. I priced spring break next year on Mariner of the Seas and it's $2000 cheaper than Disney for the same eastern itenerary (less CC of course)!! We may have to try it.
Doug
Doug, I'm happy to post a report here right now.
Word of warning though. That Mariner cruise is a Sunday-Sunday, and the crowds at the airports returning from spring break on a Sunday seemed ten times worse than any Saturday we've returned from
DCL. We're actually going to book Voyager of the Seas out of Miami next spring break as it's an eastern departing on Saturday, March 17th (same type ship as Mariner) and we'll still have the Sunday to readjust. Please join us on that one!
Anyway. RCCL exceeded our expectations. I didn't want it to, as I'm die-hard DCL fan (still my favorite
) The ship (Explorer of the Seas) was incredible. The promenade level (level 5) had a shopping mall! Not chain or national stores, but gift shops and the usual duty free alcohol and tobacco. Ladies, they also had a duty free fragrance store which also carried Estee Lauder, Clinique and Lancome cosmetics! Next door to that was a jewelry (costume) store which also sold formal gowns and evening bags! (Only 10.00 for the evening bags.) There was also a high-end jewely store which carried TagHuere (spelling?) watches and many tanzanite bracelets and rings. The 'Cafe Promenade' was a 24-hour cafe which sold Ben and Jerry's ice cream and Seattle's Best coffee. (I was disappointed though. No frappucinos, just iced coffee.) But the cafe had continuous pizza, oatmeal-raisin and chocolate chip cookies, and ham and cheese croissant sandwiches. At breakfast (till 11:00,) they had an assortment of donoughts, muffins, danishes, plus apples, bananas and oranges. The only items not free at the cafe were the coffee and Ben and Jerry's. The soda card/mug is 4.00 per day for kids (can't remember the age limit) and 6.00 per adult. Rachel had a blast, as her best friend and her parents and older brother joined us. We think they're hooked on cruising now. The 15 year-old brother already made a friend on the basketball court within two hours of embarkation, and we seldom saw him after that. There's an awesome rock-climbing wall that they loved too. An ice-skating rink as well (didn't skate though, as no one brought any long pants. Too cold
for shorts!) And all four of us adults had a great time in the casino. I'm not really much of a gambler. I enjoy watching though. Rob and I have wanted to go back to Las Vegas for many years, but can't fathom spending that kind of $$ on airfare and hotel, when we can spend it towards a cruise!
He excitedly said "I don't need Vegas now, since we have a casino on a cruise!' There was also a "Johnny Rockets' onboard. All you can eat burgers, chili dogs, fries, the BEST onion rings, grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, for 3.95. (Milkshakes are extra.I) For those of you who haven't been to one, they're delicious old-fashioned burgers. and the waiters are dressed in the white 'soda-jerk' outfits of the 1950s. They play 50s'-60's jukebox type songs too. I was in heaven! The waiters also surprised everyone with 'Y M C A.' They turned the volume up and came out and danced for everyone. (It made me think of the Turkey Day gang on Pirate night.
)
Now, I'm saving the worst for last. (Hey, what can I say, it wasn't a
Disney cruise!
) The embarkation took forever. We waited and waited and waited. It seemed very disorganized. I'm not one who wants to focus on negativity, but it didn't give me a good first impression. The waitstaff in the dining rooms worked very hard, but the food was okay at best (IMHO.) Everything you've read about RCCL having the worst dining room food is true. (IMHO again. I don't want to offend anyone who likes it.
) Most of the time it was lukewarm. The lobster bisque had no lobster! The broth was good though. Rob ordered escargot one night, and our tablemates and friends all laughed at the sight of it!
The contents were already removed from the shells (is that the correct way of saying it? I don't know enough about escargot, because I don't like the thought of it, LOL!) and were sitting a bowl of thick green sauce that looked like swamp water!) He pretended he was full and pushed it aside. I've never sent back food on DCL, but I did on RCCL. I ordered ravioli for a main course one night, but took one bite and had to force myself to swallow it. Lukewarm rubber with a runny white sauce. I ordered an average sirloin steak each night after that. And I'm glad it wasn't just us. Other people at our table left much on their plates as well. It's pretty bad when one wants to order chicken strips and fries from the children's menu. Yes folks, I thought it was that bad. I would've been happy to dine at Johnny Rocket's each night instead. One exception..the lobster tails (served on 2nd formal night) were excellent! Everyone at our table had at least two, Rob and Rick (our neighbor friend) had three! There was no seafood buffet. The food at the Windjammer buffet (RCCL'S Topsider's) was just okay as well. Portofino's (RCCL's Palo) was the pits. Service there was incredibly slow, 20.00 per person, and one could only order one entree. In short (though this has been long,)
RCCL's food, pretty much, stinks! (Nice way of putting it.) Okay now, imagine this. It was the morning we docked at Costa Maya. We're sitting at the Windjammer looking out over the water. I wasn't wearing my glasses. I looked out at another ship slowly moving in to dock. Navy blue for the most part. "Guess that's Celebrity' I thought to myself. Then I realized..NO! Saw the familiar white Mickey emblems on the smoke stacks. 'OMG Rob, look behind you.' The whole dining room fell to silence as it pulled to the dock. I overheard so many diners gasp. Many ran to the window to watch it pull in. (Myself included. I was crying inside. As we were leaving (I was trying to escape in a hurry, I knew it was coming..) we heard it! The horn! I winced! It hurt even more when I heard more passengers commenting 'wow! That's so neat! Did you hear that?) I wanted to shout..'you don't even know the HALF of it.
Yes, it ruined my morning. When we got back to the stateroom, Rachel was just waking up and said..Mom! I heard the DCL horn!' I know. So did we. Rob was annoyed with me feeling sad at first, but later that day, as we saw people getting off the Magic, he was the first to say..'look at all of those happy people..' Okay. This is getting so long. I'll try to be brief now. There was no conga line. Their so-called 'pirate night' was a group of kids from 'Adventure Ocean' marching through the dining rooms to 'we are pirates, we are pirates..' The deck party was a band playing by the pool with a buffet. Rachel (after two minutes) disappointedly looked up at me and said 'this isn't a real deck party.' RCCL Voyager class ships hold 3800 passengers to DCL's 2400. Some people might love the Megaships, but I prefer the size of the Magic. RCCL has a larger passenger to staff ratio compared to DCL's smaller passenger to staff ratio. (Hence, the slower service and lukewarm food.) The ice show on RCCL was good, but nothing compared to Disney dreams and Hercules. Also, I really missed the warm, inviting feeling of families with children on the DCL ships. Don't get me wrong. There were many families onboard, but there was very much lacking when it came to the 'warm- fuzzy' feel we get on DCL. I kept wishing to see the characters.
DCL has set a standard that's impossible for other cruise lines to meet. RCCL'S sailaway party was lame at best. Now, ironically, we had a wonderful time. And we'll sail RCCL again. (Teenagers LOVE it.) But I was eager to get home when we did, and I wasn't sad when we drove away from the port. On DCL, I'm depressed for two days afterward.
This is another example of 'you get what you pay for.' The good thing though..these prices have enabled us to cruise more often. I told Rob I'm willing to sail RCCL again (he loved it more than I did) if we can still do DCL too. I highly encourage everyone here to give RCCL a try (let us know when, we'll probably join you
but don't expect DCL. You'll be disappointed. Sailing with friends made all the difference. If we hadn't had our neighbors with us, I know we wouldn't have had as great of a time.
Please ask any questions! I just think I should end this particular one post, as I might have exceeded my limit!
