The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I just saw Eclipsed a few weeks ago. It was a different experience, because although I've seen many Broadway productions, they've all been musicals. I'm not really sure how I felt about it, but I loved the actress who played Number 2. One thing I would suggest is to familiarize yourself a bit with the Liberian civil wars. There was a placard outside the bathrooms that had information about them, but the lines for the bathroom were so long that you really couldn't stop to read the entire thing. It would have been helpful to have that information printed in the Playbill. In any case, enjoy your trips. They sound wonderful.

Thanks for the tip! We will do a bit of study before we go.

Thinking of trying to get tickets for Cagney tomorrow. Has anyone seen it yet?

No, but my friend's husband is the stage manager. I've heard some good things from her and some others. If you go, let me know what you think! I've heard it is pretty tap-heavy, and I LOVE tap dancing.

We did end up going to see Cagney yesterday, 2pm matinee. We were able to get tickets around noon at the box office. All tickets are $89, which I thought was a bit much, but my mom really wanted to see the play since she actually knew James Cagney. I asked about rush tickets, and the guy at the box office seemed reluctant, but if they have them, they really have to sell them, so we were in row M in the orchestra for $25 each.
I'm really glad we only paid $25 each, because it was definitely not worth the $89. The tap dancing was good (it wasn't all tap, but a lot) and the main actor did look and sound like Cagney, but the play itself reminded us of "Springtime for Hitler" in "The Producers", in that some parts seemed like they were actually trying to suck. There were no real catchy numbers that you would continue to hum or sing on the way home. I would not recommend it or go see it again.

I saw Something Rotten again the other night... This time with 40 high school students in tow. The students were excellent and very well-behaved. However, I don't think I would want to chaperone another trip again! We left Massachusetts at 6 a.m. Friday morning and got back at 3 a.m. Saturday... I am only 26, but I am far too old for day trips! And we also visited the 9/11 museum, which was very nice, but I am not sure the students appreciated it. I could easily go back and spend a day there, but most of the students were finished within an hour. I am going back to NYC with my mom in April and we are seeing Waitress and something else (we haven't decided on a second show yet), but we are going for two days and planning to take it very slow, as my mom had triple bypass in November and I am still struggling with my thyroid after surgery over a year ago. We are planning on two shows (Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon) with very little touristy stuff - shopping at the most!

Awwww. How disappointing. I'm glad we opted for Eclipsed that day instead.

That's not a day trip!!!! When our high school theatre group went to NYC, they truly went for the day!! It was just crazy. Left on Sat at 6am, and left the city after dinner. Usually wandered about Manhattan for a few hours, then met up and went to a matinee, then had dinner, and back on the bus to head for home...central Mass!!!! Man, that was a long day!!!

I am a teacher as well. We will go into the city for a field trip and I have to say, no matter how short the ride is, it's exhausting trying to herd kids through NYC. I've brought kids to the museum of Natural History, the Met and Discovery Times Square, and they have all been taxing and exhausting, and we spend about an hour on the bus!

Cant imagine escorting children in NYC. lol Every man for himself. I tell DD and DH - FOLLOW ME. :P

Tonight DH & I are going to 54 Below to see Kara Lindsay's cabaret debut. Loved her in Little House on the Prairie and of COURSE, Newsies! We got to know her a bit, so we figured we would trek into the city on a week night to give her support!

I'll be interested to hear what you think. I'm taking the girls in May, and they are fans of the book.

I'm curious to see it. I've actually never read the book, or seen movie version. I saw a preview of the out-of-town in Atlanta and that piqued my curiosity and for $20.. I figured 'why not?'

Yeah, that was a cool promo (the $19.75). I read the book (when I was a kid and then again just a few weeks ago), but never saw the movie. I really don't know what to expect though I've seen set pictures that look gorgeous. It seemed like just the thing to take my dreamy "extra daughter" to. Enjoy!

I need to buy tickets for this promotion and they look like they are already getting picked through....but I have to wait on my mom telling me when she is free! I am getting stressed!

Does anyone here have an opinion about buying "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" last minute? I have the TKTS app and see that it appears there frequently but it is one of the shows that I really want to see this August! It's pricy (aren't they all?) and if we can save a bit and get 1/2 decent seats through TKTS then I will cool my jets and wait. Have bought "American Psycho" so far but that's all.

I think it depends when in August you are planning to go. In general I think you'll be fine, but as it moves closer to the end of the month you might have more difficulty since the show is closing on Labor Day weekend. For what it's worth, I LOVED the show and saw it twice. It's coming to Pittsburgh on tour in January, and I bought 20 tickets so I can take every teenager I know (and like--not the ones I don't ;) ).

Thanks for the input. Yes.. we are going at the end of August (25 through Sept 3). I really don't want to miss this show so I may bite the bullet and buy in advance. 20 tickets! Wow... rock star status!
