Our magical moment ruined...

Wow. Just read the whole thread, and while I am very glad the OP's DD was not injured, I think what she expected is a bit . . . excessive.

Did the certificate state "crocs or flip-flops ONLY"? Or just footwear? Because my daughters got some wicked cute pink sparkley sneakers there in June. They had no problems walking in them the majority of the day, and showed no signs of blisters or the like after wearing them for hours. There were several types of sneakers, sandals, slippers and other footwear for children at Mouse Gears, all under $25. I know the pink sneakers were about $18 each.

Maybe the OP was hoping for a "larger" Dream? I know I saw a family pooh-pooh a bump to the front of the line on Nemo because it wasn't THE Castle Suite.

While I've not left a cell phone in a Disney room, I have left a digital camera that was lost and I filed a claim for. Disney gave me a compensation, and no, it wasn't what the camera was worth, I was very impressed that they did anything at all to compensate for what at the time was my pregnancy-induced stupidity. I thought that was plenty for Disney to do, however, I am a glass half full type of gal.

And, for what it's worth, my DS had his Adidas sneaker chewed by the escalator at our local mall last year. He was not misbehaving, facing front, and the laces were tied, BUT, he was standing right up by the side of the escalator and the treads just seemed to get caught.

Much as I wanted a shopping spree at Neiman Marcus, he settled for an ice cream cone courtsey of the Mall Management.

Just wanted to say that this particular thread is quite entertaining, and since I've not had a shoe eaten by an elevator, and find it hard to fault Disney on anything :-)lmao: ), I'll leave it at that!

sorul82? - do you know how to photoshop? Because I would LOVE to see that picture along with an escalator by it! And congrats on your twingle ;)

grannyminnie - I mean this in the nicest way, but this thread would indeed be mighty interesting if they were ELEVATORS eating shoes, and not ESCALATORS. That has all the promise of a crappy horror movie! :)

Oops!! :lmao: Guess I better get my glasses changed!!

:thumbsup2 Not only was the free doll not the remedy(although I would have been so happy that my DD was ok that I would have bought her the biggest Minnie doll I could find, with my own money), it was not their responsibility. Being Disney, they tried to make an unfortunate situation better by offering her some footwear but that was not good enough. IMO, I am not sure it ever is for some.

I totally agree. For some, it's never enough.

I'm so glad that the child was not injured!

I don't at all understand getting her a doll instead of shoes on her feet. I would have told my 4 year old she had to wear crocs or flip flops the rest of the day, or go all the way back to the hotel to change shoes. Its not going to harm a child to put on a non fashionable pair of shoes for a few hours. Being barefoot in Disney seems more hazardous, imo.

Well said!!

Well this thread has me thinking...We stayed at OKW about a month ago. The very first day, no first HOUR, we were in the room my oldest DD coincidentally opened the door to the back deck the same time my DH opened the front door to the villa. A backdraft, if you will, was created (it was extremely windy that day) and the back door slammed. My DD missed being slammed in the bum by the door but the metal blind valance (that is only up by a very long magnet) fell off the door and hit her smack dab on top of the head. Long story short, we called to have someone come check her and fill out a report (which they did very thoroughly and with much grace). However, I NEVER EVER thought about compensation of any sort. That was the absolute furthest thing from my mind. We just considered it a freak accident and considered ourselves lucky. I was worried that DD would develop a concussion or something. Perhaps I should have demanded a free night in the room? Or a free boat rental?
Sorry for the long post...just had to get this off my mind because I am also of the mindset that unfortunate things happen and you make the best of it and don't expect anything. And if the OP's daughter's shoe looked anything like the CROC that was posted I would probably get up every morning and kiss every one of those little toes :)

While I have read stories and seen things on the news about rubber soled shoes and escalators, I have been very mindful when wearing my crocs.
I was reading the story of the little girl having her shoe eaten by the escalator and I must admit I was thinking of how hard the CM tried to make everything up to the little girl. It seemed to me, since she wasn't hurt giving the certificate for replacement shoes was appropriate. I do not think I ever would have considered trying to get a doll with the certificate I was told was for shoes. Maybe I am not looking at it right. I would have been thrilled if my child was given extra special attention by a CM and allowed to do extra things, and get a certificate for shoes. I am afraid I would have just been grateful for no missing toes and offer of some shoes to wear. Maybe the certificate could have been for more money and that would have made it seem more right. I just don't think I would have let the fact that being told the certificate was for shoes and not a doll would have made me want to think of the incident as ruining anything.:confused3

She lost a shoe, not her foot. compensation was offered, just not the compensation that was wanted. if a plush was sucked into an escalator than you should be offered a replacement plush. but since a shoe was sucked into the escalator, ergo the certificate for the shoes... be thankful that there was someone there to give you the certificate in the first place. your magical moment wasn't ruined, just a shoe. say thank you and move on...

Thank you for putting it much better than I did.;)

This reminds me of a story that GMA ran months ago about Crocs being dangerous and being eaten by escalators. Every since I saw that piece I've made sure DD and I keep our feet away from the side of the escalator as, according the the GMA story, that's where the danger lies. If your Croc rubs against the side it can melt and get caught. My DD's comment at the time (and she's only 7) was that that could happen with any plastic type shoe and flip flops and sandals could get eaten too! Was your DD's foot near the side, or in the middle? Just wanted to know so it wouldn't happen to us.

I'm not going to comment on the OP other than to say did anyone notice that the one really sarcastic comment(s) came from a newbie? All 3 of his/her posts are on this thread. Isn't there a rule about being nasty and sarcastic?

Oh, and final comment, OP, I'm glad your DD was fine. :goodvibes I hope you get compensated for the cost of your Nikes.

 :cheer2: :bounce:

This is how myself and my family are and I'm glad to see we're not alone.

When I was 4 I fell down the escalator at Sears. I hit the corner of my eye and cut it pretty bad and still have the scar to prove it. I remember my father felt so awful he personally bought me a bozo doll with his own money. I know he felt even worse when my mother yelled at him for not watching me closer and holding my hand. The people at sears took me in the office and cleaned me up and sent us on our way. Accidents happen especially with kids and I have many scars from growing up to prove it.

I will spare you and not tell you how I would have handled the situation had I been in it. Everyone handles things in different ways because we are all different.

I am really glad to hear your daughter is alright and didn't get seriously hurt which is the most important thing to me.

Having worked in claims for many years I would like to say something, if a company is responsible for the destruction of an item they are responsible to replace it.
Wouldn't that ultimately be the company that built and installed the escalator? And yes, I work in insurance too, and I realize one files a claim against every person/entity involved. In this case, that would be the escalator manufacturer, the installer (if different), Disney, and Nike - and probably more I can't think of at the moment, given the time :)

If the company cannot replace the original item adequately-which they could not-they are required to monetarily compensate you for the damages of the loss.
First, doesn't the claimant have to reasonably prove negligence or intent on the part of "the company"? And, it was YOUR choice not to escalate the issue to apparently even Guest Services. The Dream Squad Cast Member did what she was authorized (but not required) to do, which is provide your daughter with alternate footwear. The certificate you had was valid for either of two types of footwear, ONLY. By the way, while I don't know Disney's policy, the Crocs cart at my local airport will accept returns for seven or fourteen days, even if the Crocs have been worn. You may have been able to buy your daughter Crocs to use for the rest of the day, and return them the next.

Thank you for not being nasty, I think more than one person has been.

Disney is responsible for the shoe because Disney is responsible for the escalator that ate the shoe. Since escalators don't just eat shoes then something must be wrong with their maintenance or equipment.
Cynical, but not nasty. You're right, escalators DON'T 'just eat shoes' - not even this time. No part of the escalator reached up and latched onto your daughter's Nike and started eating it.
