Third US case of coronavirus confirmed in OC

If you are otherwise healthy, Covid-19 is really not much of a threat. You are unlikely to catch it at Disney anyway vs something like flu or noro but if you did, unless you have underlying conditions, you’d likely get less sick than if you caught influenza.

What is your data to back this claim up? Wasn't that doctor who died an otherwise healthy 34 year old man?

As with anything, there will be cases that fall outside the norm. We also don't actually know the health history of that doctor. Either way that one case does not change the fact that the data indicates that the elderly and otherwise sick are most severely affected. Children, it turns out, are the least affected of any population group. You can choose to still worry about it but then you should also worry about theme park accidents and getting into a car crash en route.

He was likely a doctor working around the clock for days though when this disease broke, keep in mind. Doctors don’t necessarily take the best care if themselves.

Or...maybe he didn’t even die of the virus considering the silencing that can happen there? Conspiracy theories allowed on here?

I’d be far more concerned about the Flu than this virus. I think the media are doing a great job freaking people out needlessly.
This ^^^

Scary-sounding viruses from foreign countries are media red meat. You should ABSOLUTELY wash your hands a LOT, use hand sanitizer after every ride, wipe down your table before you eat, avoid touching your face, and take other common-sense public health awareness precautions. However, you are at a significantly greater risk of catching the flu or norovirus at Disney than coronavirus. Norovirus probably won't kill you even though you think it will at the time (as me know I know... twice). The flu has already killed over 8,000 people in the U.S. alone this year, but catching the flu is perceived as "normal", so those deaths don't get the same degree of media attention. I would not skip this once-in-a-lifetime event due to fear of coronavirus.

I am taking any information China puts out about this virus with a HUGE grain of salt. They are not trustworthy at ALL. I'll wait until our scientists and doctors do their own analysis.

You will be waiting a long time for there to be enough patient data in the US to conduct a reliable study. If you are determined to be worried about it that's your choice.

I'm worried about it because my husband is currently living in Japan and has to travel around Asia for work. He was in Taiwan last week and will be in S Korea a week from now for 2 weeks, and they now have a large number of cases there too. He is supposed to come home end of March to visit for a week. So yeah, I'm worried about it. I think I have a reason to be.

That has nothing to do with worrying about catching covid-19 in Disneyland. Worry about your husband not being able to get back into the US or having to enter quarantine. That's a legitimate concern. You are a great deal more likely to be exposed via your husband than from a random park guest in Disneyland.

I originally dismissed this virus as something similar to the flu (which I am always concerned about, btw... 3/4 of our family has medical conditions that put us in the high risk category), but after reading more about it over the last few weeks, and watching videos of Chinese people being welded into their homes, or rounded up on the street and thrown in metal boxes, or stacks of body bags, or reading about young doctors dying from it (not just one, but a few, at least), I am much more concerned. It seems to be insanely contagious, and they do not yet know all the ways it spreads. It also appears that people can have the virus (and thus share the germs), while being asymptomatic, so instead of Typhoid Mary, we could have all sorts of Coronavirus Marys spreading disease. I have been following the outbreak on the cruiseship pretty closely (I am on a cruise forum also), and it went from one man to 625 people (at last count). They say it has a mortality rate of 2-3%, but when you look at the amount of cases that are "resolved" (meaning they don't have it anymore, either through death or getting well), it is actually 11%. Anyway... I actually think the media is under reporting and I have to look for articles. I want to believe it is being hyped up, but I actually think it is the opposite, and China is far under reporting what is going on. I think we have all grown up in such a wonderful time of antibiotics and vaccines that we don't have a full appreciation of what infectious diseases can really do.

You are completely disregarding the fact that they know that there are people who test positive and NEVER show symptoms and who were simply tested due to proximity to confirmed cases. Based on that information it's more likely that the mortality rate is lower and the actual case rate much higher due to cases that are never diagnosed.

For people who are anxious about this virus I really strongly recommend that you stop looking for articles and start looking at original sources from places like the CDC and the WHO. News sites make their money off you clicking on dramatic headlines.

We are booked to fly to WDW for our spring break in a few weeks. News of this new virus first came out after we booked all our FP+s (we got all the good ones too!)

My husband was already of the mindset that we should cancel, but I wasn’t ready to, the kids would be so disappointed if we couldn’t go.

So every day I watch the news, always hopeful that this virus will be contained and just go away before our trip. But it isn’t happening and is being more widespread around the world.

We will be cancelling our trip soon, paying a big penalty for the flight portion. Plan to go in the summer, maybe this will all be over by then. To all those who say it’s not as deadly, I realize so far, not everyone “dies” from this virus, but do I want my family to be sick from this virus in another country, what if my husband and I both get infected but not our children, what will happen to them alone without us, etc. Most likely it will not happen, but no guarantees, it’s all due to luck. So it just isn’t worth the risk to us.

You need to get off YouTube.

I already said I am not worried specifically about Disneyland earlier in the thread.

I am starting to get MORE worried though as cases in Japan ramp up. There are a large number of Japanese visitors to Disneyland. There are currently no travel restrictions in place from any countries other than China and Hong Kong, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that cases may soon start showing up in Southern CA from people who have recently traveled from Japan.

Since the OP mentioned spring break, which is likely 4-6 weeks away, it is worth keeping an eye on things as they develop stateside. It could be a non issue by then, but it can also go the other way.

Sorry. I mistook you for the OP. In your position I would be concerned not so much about the possibility of actually becoming severely ill but would potentially be concerned about ending up in quarantine.

The vast majority don't die. That's different from 'not everyone.' This isn't the Black Death. Cancelling is a personal decision. You have to do what you're comfortable with. If you are going to spend the trip worrying then what's the point? But also, 4 people in a family were recently killed in a car crash 10 miles from WDW. Don't let what ifs run your life.

You know what this is the second post like this in a few days - I am going to post a different opinion - Yes, stay away, everyone stay away from Disneyland due to this deadly virus. Especially between April 25th and May 3rd so my daughter and I can have the park to ourselves!!

If 3/4 of your family are medically deemed high risk, then I would avoid all places with crowds during cold and flu season.

Cruise ships are cesspools of disease. I actually would avoid a cruise right now.

I guarantee shopping carts have the exact same germs you find at Disneyland.

Wash hands. A lot. we went Wednesday and are going back 3/5. Until there’s an outbreak in OC or they trace someone back with the illness to Disneyland, we are going. But no one in my family is medically high risk.

I am concerned that my husband will simply not be allowed to enter this country so soon after being in South Korea. If that happens, we will just push his visit back a few weeks. No big deal.

What concerns me MORE is him being exposed to this virus while en route, either at the airport or on the plane, and not knowing. I am worried he will bring that virus here and unknowingly infect our family. It's an awful conundrum.
