If the flattening isn't working is it time to face reality?

And you know what else? Emergency rooms are being overrun.

Maybe everyone should quit running straight to the hospital with fevers, cough and just follow the guidelines given to call or videochat, which most likely they will tell you not to come in unless breathing impaired or you get worse.

Most people who have this can be treated at home!!! Just quarantine yourself and family for 14 days, whether you know you have covid or not!!!

What a parade of ignorance on this thread!

First, this developed as a possible epidemic on Dec 31st, 2019. We were informed by China on Jan 10th. There is no such thing as 'months' that went by. But some time did go by.

Please stop guessing about what the mortality rate will be when it's all over. It's too soon to tell. Right now, we need to be focused on what's right in front of us: doing our best so that the healthcare system is not overwhelmed. Otherwise we will lose lives unnecessarily, and that will in turn hurt the economy. The better we do now, the sooner that restrictions (which mostly are not in place yet) can be lifted. I have no idea when all this will be and neither do you.

I know those folks in Europe will return to the cafes, cultural events, and sports in droves.

And let's look on the bright side: fewer school shootings.

We've already been through this. A poster made a claim that people were saying things they weren't actually saying. Dan Patrick did not say anything about letting gramma die so we can get our wing fix on.
"No one reached out to me and said, as a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance for your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren? And if that’s the exchange, I’m all in,” Patrick said on Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s show.

Patrick continued: “I just think there are lots of grandparents out there in this country like me — I have 6 grandchildren — that, what we all care about, and what we love more than anything are those children. And I want to live smart and see through this but I don’t want the whole country to be sacrificed.”

The quicker people follow the suggestions and stay home unless you have to go out the faster this will most likely end. Its really only been a week since they really told people to stay home. Its crazy that people all ready have cabin fever.

Yup. He said that. Loud and proud.
He's all in.
I'm going to hope that this isn't a widely accepted view in Texas.

He stated his opinion as a senior citizen and a grandparent.
Now kindly point to where he said he'd kill your grandmother so he and his buddies could get his BBQ wings.
That is what the poster claimed was being said. Except it isn't being said, it is what that poster is misinterpreting as being said. Apparently just like you are.

If you want to continue this exchange- go back in the thread and read my comments, I'm not going to say anything different to you then what is already written.

Wow, I actually commend him for being part of the high risk category and voicing that reasonable opinion. We have community email lists and there is one old guy on that list that is so afraid of dying that he actually posts factually incorrect info stating that all ages are dying at the same rate.

The country was shut down because they were thinking the death rate would be 5%. It is not. It's is around 1%. Time to reopen.

Also, like said above if people would stop overwhelming the ER with a cough this wouldn't be as big of a problem (the overcrowding of hospitals)

YOU may consider that a reasonable opinion. I think it is short sighted and selfish.

Your two statements directly contradict each other. If you open right now as you suggest, the hospitals will be overwhelmed in 1-2 weeks and the death rate will likely double.

What is so hard about just listening to the experts on this?

Trying to flatten the curve for a few weeks and if that doesn't work, doing more to protect the most vulnerable population is short sighted and selfish?

Have we also quarantined logic?

It isn't working

IIRC Cuomo didn't want to issue a shelter in place, it just went in to effect yesterday. Wasn't he at odds with DeBlasio about NYC when all this started?
Maybe he should have listened to him back then.

Maybe they just don't work because in order for them to we depend on individuals.
Recommendations and warnings have been in place long before these orders to shelter.
Since we can't depend on individuals to do the right thing just for 2 weeks to see if anything would get better, do we really think any of this is going to matter in the long run?
The virus IS running it's course. We aren't stopping it.

I don't know if it will work as planned or not, but this is what is going to happen except in select areas.

Places like NYC, with its reliance on mass transit, will not be able to go back to work without a major recurrence unless everyone starts wearing hazmat suits.
