Ignore. Just practicing posting pics

Fess up! Y'ur goin' to the Fort!

OK. I confess. I was at the Fort. Look for the TR- which will be starting soon!

Not to resurrect the "is it the same ship on Discovery Island" debate...but I located a few pics of my first Fort trip at Christmas 1977, and they include a shot I took from the boat of Treasure Island and the "shipwreck". The quality is poor at best, as my scanner is currently unavailable so I just snapped a shot with my digital camera.

While at the Fort, I had to get some photos of the Shipwreck . . .

And, I even got some from about the same angle as your photo, Dave . . .

These are from this past weekend (6/11/10-6/14/10):

As you can see, the stern of the ship is completely gone, and vegetation is growing in the ship. It looks like the mast is still attached, and it can be seen leaning into the tree line.

It looks like the wreck is on the same corner of the island as the photos with the Contemporary Resort in the background, and you can see from these photos that taking a shot from the water would result in the Contemporary Tower being in the background.

Having seen the wreck first hand, it looks like it is the remains of the same ship in the old photos. I thought it was smaller, but it does seem to be about the same size, just with the back end missing.

Wow! There's not much of that ship wreck left. It is amazing how quickly mother nature takes it back.

Look at the stern in this Pic it’s very high

Same reason I hate ferris wheels.

Ferris Wheels! Ugghhh! Even worse!

:cheer2: Yea! A TCD TR! BTW, great DI pics!

Construction of the first theme park in Disney World, the Magic Kingdom, as well as on two hotels and a campground. Construction began in April, 1969.

Assuming this is the point of reference to the "I was alive then" discussion. I was alive too, only 7 mos old, but def alive!

Phew! I don't feel so bad now. ;)

Me neither! :goodvibes

All this talk and all these pics regarding the DI shipwreck got me thinking.....what about some pics of the wildlife at DI?

Correctamundo! You're not the only one who pretends to be at the Fort when not actually at the Fort. We often sit in the camper in our back yard and say to each other..."Which park do you wanna do today...MK or Epcot?" or my fave..."So, you wanna go down to Bay Lake and watch Wishes?" We consider all non-Fort camping trips "practice runs"! :lmao: While at a Lake that is not Bay...you can pretend to watch the Water Pageant go by. I have the music on a playlist in my head so this one is not hard for me at all!

Thanks for the well wishes for a great trip. Day 1 was not so great as I have already posted on another thread. I will add a link later for anyone brave enough...er, I mean interested in reading it. Days 2 and 3 were much, much better. Would rather have been at the Fort.

ADD: Here's the link, it's post #679 unless the tiredness made me blind.

Great brochure DC! I don't believe we have this one in the treasure trove!

Now that I have too much time on my hands I found this fun fact.
Given that central Florida is primarily a wetlands region, construction crews faced a variety of challenges with relocating water while not affecting the local environment. Construction crews built more than 50 miles of levees and canals around the property to maintain levels and quality of the local fresh water while draining areas where construction would take place. This control system, which functions automatically based on water levels and without electricity, helps to minimize flooding without removing water from the area. Even bodies of water that would remain on the site needed to be cleaned and made safer for recreational use. Bay Lake was drained of its water and cleaned of muck. Construction workers removed more than seven million cubic yards of dirt from an adjacent area to create a man-made lagoon, named Seven Seas Lagoon. Sand from beneath the removed muck was used to create beaches around the lagoon. Once Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon had been filled with water, the surrounding areas served as the setting for one of the hotels, the Polynesian Village Resort.

KFK- Thanks for the new photos! They show what a nice, but simple, place DI was. I totally remember the tortoises and their beach.

DisCamper- Love the brochure. We have definitely seen some of those photos before. See that one of the two men playing checkers? Where do you think that one was taken? I have this vague recollection that there used to be a pot bellied stove in the Settlement Trading post. The Trading Post certainly does not look like it does in that photo now. I am not sure if I have ever seen the photo of the family at the picnic table before. Love the dad's sideburns. Also, I had a Tonka truck similar to the one the boy is playing with. What is the girl doing? Is that a radio? And, I didn't know that Avion trailers were a Fleetwood product. I saw one at the Fort this past weekend- they look like Airstreams. I wonder why they stopped making them, but Airstream is still plugging along.

Wow, KFK, I read your post from the link. I didn't realize you had an ASD child. Our DS, Caleb, age 9 is Asperger's.

He is one of the main reasons we choose to camp at Disney instead of staying in a hotel. He loves coming home to "his" surroundings. Makes for a much more relaxed trip! :thumbsup2

Sadly, KFK never rode the FW Railroad. :sad1:

Yes, figmentfan1, I do have an ASD child. DH and I were discussing on our last trip, (when things settled down) how much simpler it is to take our DS on a trip w/a camper verses a hotel. We are in and out of it so much at home, he equates it with BEING home. I think the familiarity helps to keep his behavior balanced and gives him a comfy place to decompress. Besides, the sites are cheaper than a hotel and we can bring our own food (further savings) which allows a longer stay. We LOVE the Fort!

Since you have an ASD child, you may want to read through the entire thread that the link came from. We have a blast over there swapping stories, asking for and giving advice. We've developed a little community of friends on that thread with no worries of flaming no matter what you share with the group. Being a Fort Fiend, I am mostly over here on the camping boards, but I do enjoy the Schmolland thread heaps and bunches. These little guys and gals keep it interesting don't they? We just took our boys to see Toy Story 3 today. What fun! It was the first time we've taken our spectrum kid to the movies...and he did great. It only took $40.00 for tickets and $18.00 for 2 cokes and a bucket of popcorn, plus the cookies and goldfish I snuck in my purse, but he did it! He made it through the whole thing with no meltdowns! Whoo! Hoo! The experience was fantastic!

YOU'RE WELCOME, YOU'RE WELCOME, YOU'RE WELCOME! :goodvibes Please go through your mom's closet! You just might find something great!

Ohhhhh! I used to love catching a Disney Classic in the theatre. It was all the way in back of the old arcade. Loved it, loved it, loved it! .....and it was only 1 dollar!

Does anyone remember this place?

I REMEMBER IT WELL! NOTICE THE PRICE ON MY STUB. IT WAS ONLY $1.00 WHEN WE WENT. ;) :thumbsup2 WISH THEY'D BRING THAT BACK! IT WAS SUCH A TREAT TO SEE A CLASSIC DISNEY MOVIE IN THE CR! I WISH THE STUBS HAD THE NAME OF THE MOVIE PLAYING ON THEM.

I see it was Cinema III in 1979 and Cinema II in 1983. But those day are long gone that area is now a private restaurant

I didn't even notice the II and III. I hate that area is now a restaurant....and furthermore I do NOT like that Fantasia has been uprooted for the sake of the arcade and turned into what looks like several stands out in the open. That's just plain wrong! IMO. IT WAS MY FAVORITE, NEVER MISS A TRIP SHOPPING THERE, SHOP! I ALWAYS GOT SOMETHING FROM THERE, BUT NO MORE!

I loved the arcade I spent a lot of my parents money there. It was sad to see all of it go way for a stinking restaurant
